If you are over 18 AND in college/higher education your parents can claim you as a dependent. If you are over 18, not in school and not disabled they cannot claim you. That is regardless of whether you live with them/contribut to expenses or not.
When you have a dependent it lowers your taxable income as well as offers you credits and rebates.
Whether or not you can file as exempt depends on how much money you made not your dependent stauts.

You're not giving enough info as to your situation. Do you live with your parents? Did they provide for over 50% of your support? How old are you? If you've already filed your income taxes, have you informed them of it? I really think this is something you need to discuss with your parents & maybe a qualified tax consultant - I don't think I'd depend on what someone else "thinks" for something as important as this! Good luck

First of all how old are you? i think if your under 18 then they can still claim you.

If you worked and paid them to live there, they should NOT have claimed you.
TAXI MAMA
if they paid for over half of your upkeep they are allowed to claim you.

If your parents claim you then you should be filing expemt on your W2's. You cant file two seperate tax forms on the same social. If your working and paying taxes and over the age of 18 they shouldnt be claiming you.

your parents can claim you but it doesnt mean they are taking 1/2 your money. To see how much they are getting vs you you cna go to a local H&R block and they will tell you both ways for free. They can tell you from there how to reverse your claim if need be and yes you cna reverse it but youd have to talk to a Tax professional about it.

If you are under 18 then your parents claim you. If you are over 18 and living with your parents then they have the option to claim you.
