If our council tax band is lowered can we claim a refund?
We recently discovered that our flat has been banded higher than all the other identical flats in our building. The valuations office has it listed as a 2 bedroom property but it is definitely only a 1 bedroom property. They are sending an inspector to double check this. If he agrees (and he will have little choice unless he finds a magical door to a second bedroom!) and our council tax band is lowered can we claim a refund on the money we have been paying for a 2 bedroom property/higher council tax band?

hi

if you go to moneysaving expert.com and select frm the top bar "reclaim £100's, then select "council tax rebranding"
this will give you a step by step guide of how to reclaim the funds & how much your entitled to - there's a consumer forum on there too if more help is needed.

You could of course be in the right band and the rest in the wrong band. This happened to a man living in Yorkshire. He applied for rebanding and the rest of the street went up one band. He was not very popular.
However, if your flat does prove to be in a too high band, the Valuation Office will inform the council and a refund will be made for the period you have been in the property. They will also contact any previous owners and a refund will be made to them.

Yes, you can claim the difference back to when you moved into the property or when it was last assessed - whichever is the later.
