If someone has $0 in income (unemployed, no benefits) do they need to file taxes if over age 18?
Someone told me you still need to file and say you made $0 . Is that true?

If you did not earn any income in 2006, then you don't have to file a return.

Nope, but it is probably time for you to get a job. :-)

vaibhav_144
no.

You do not need to file, you may if you wish to. If you have paid any phone bills in the last 31 months you may be eligible for the $30 exercise tax rebate.

Steve D
No you don't need to file any paperwork with the government.

Judy1
No it's not true. If you don't have any income, or your income is below the filing limit for your filing status, you don't file.

You don't have to, but, you should just to cover yourself. I believe if you make under 10 thousand dollars you don't have to file, however, I always filed even when I had no income.

larryclay2006
absolutely.

It only takes a few minutes to do that can save you hours of aggravation down the road. I recommend doing them just to have them on file.

and earned income is contingent upon qualfying factors. How can you provide support if you earn no income?

definitley file just in case. you would be suprised, you may actually get money back. you can use turbo tax online for free since you made less then 30,000 (thats not the exact number, but either way you made less)
go to http://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/ and you wont have to pay anything and its pretty easy. Ive always done it myself.
Last year i didnt work once and i got 300 back so who knows, you may get something too.

Adorabilly
no. if you make less than 5,000 dollars in ayear and are over the age of 18 you do not need to file.

Now if you are collecting unemployment, or trying to get EIC then you do need to file.

I would use one of the free online tax forms and see what it says.

go to www.irs.gov and then do a search for free taxes. they will send you to an several online places. I would use handrblock and have your taxes done for free. It may be possible that you got something called the EIC (earned income credit coming back to you)

No. If you have absolutely no income whatsoever, you don't *have* to file. You can if you'd like but it's a waste of time and paper.

However, if you have income but don't actually *owe* any taxes, you still have to file. This may have been what the person who told you that meant.

If you make any money over $600 (I believe that's the current threshold) in a year you have to file taxes whether or not you actually end up oweing the IRS anything.

Only if you are getting something back thru earned income credit.

You might want to file anyway, so that the FBI don't come looking to see how someone with no reported income is surviving!

I am almost positive that if you have no income you don't have to file an income tax return. Also, I think there is a minimum income you need to make in order to file...over $600.
