Because if gasoline prices go any higher then it would be more expensive for Wal-Mart (2,000,000 Employees and increasing) to move stuff from the Big Distribution Centers to each Wal-Mart and that would mean higher prices and that would mean less sales and that would mean less profits and that would mean more unemployment and that would mean more crime and that would mean more welfare.
In the end, the bigger the number of unemployed the bigger the check Uncle Sam has to write.
In a dream world unemployment would be 0% and that would mean $0.00 in welfare.
The taxes taken from gasoline are small when you compare it to the billions spend on welfare.
In fact, taxes should be increased to $1.00 per gallon (From a few cents) to keep gasoline prices higher than $4.00 per gallon and that would force the population to drive cars with Diesel Engines or E85 (15% Gasoline 85% Ethanol)
Do we really need to drive an Audi S4 Avant (15 MPG)?
That car should be Illegal in the United States of America or at least charge a special "Irrational Tax" of $5,000.00 to pay for the purchase of a Volkswagen New Beetle (Or any other model 1999 (Or Newer) with a Diesel Engine and Manual Transmission (Ebay Item 4650289822) then that car would be exchanged for an older car with 8 cylinders or more that could be legally exported to Canada or Mexico.
That would reduce the number of cars running on gasoline by one and at the same time increase the number of cars running on diesel by one. |

Tupply and Demand. the lower the price of gas, the higher the consumption/use of gas and thus the government collects more taxes overall. The price of gasoline tax is also left up to each State. WI for example has one of the highest gasoline taxes in the Country. |

The tax is not on the price per gallon but per gallon. So if the price is $2 or $10, if you fill your auto with 10 gallons, the governtmetn will collect the same amount of tax...on the 10 gallons. |

You need gas to get to work. This way more people work, that means more wage taxes and more sales taxes and more property taxes. It is all about substitution. They substitute one revenue for another trying to prime the pump so to speak. If they don't people will save their money and the economy will slow down since less money is in action. If the economy slows down too much our national debt rises and the dollar drops against foreign currencies. Plus, it never hurts to make the voters happy during the holidays. |
