If you don't owe anything, are you guaranteed to get the May tax rebate?

Richard M
It's not how much you owe. It's how much you paid in taxes (including your withholding) that counts.

The tax rebate is based on your 2007 earnings and Federal Income Tax liability.

Assuming you are not a dependent, you would be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $600 if you paid that much in Federal Income Tax. If you only paid $350 in taxes (less than the $600 rebate limit), you only get back $350. If you had earned income or social security of at least $3000, you would get at least the minimum rebate of $300. Similarly, couples filing jointly can receive up to $1200. If you qualify for a rebate, you will receive $300 for each dependent child under 17.

Use the Kiplinger rebate tax calculator (link below) to compute your rebate.

Not necessarily. If you are a dependent, you aren't eligible. And if you aren't a dependent, you have to have at least $3000 in eligible income on your 2007 tax return to qualify.

Megan
You have to file, have an SSN, not be a dependent, and be between a minimum and maximum income. All the info is here:

If you do not know the answer to this question by now it is very likely you do not qualify.

As long as you made >3k and <75k (as single taxpayer) AND you file a tax return you will get some money.

Note that any monies you receive this year will be deducted out of next year's refund.

Lee, CPA - TurboTax employee
If you didn't have any ''tax liability" in 2007 (Form 1040, line 57 + line 47) but had "qualifying income" such as wages, business income, social security benefits, and/or VA benefits, then you'll get a rebate of at least $300 if you file your 2007 tax return.

Your withholding for 2007 and/or balance due on your tax return is irrelevant. It's the tax liability that matters.

Yes, I just received a letter in the mail from the IRS stating as long as you filed a 2007 Tax Return, just sit back and wait for your May Tax Rebate. The Feds will calculate if you will get $300 or more.
