L'ster | If you don't owe anything state tax, do you have to file? |
I was helping my parents doing their tax return. They are getting a small refund from Federal, but nothing is owe or due on state. Do they still have to file the state? The state is Arizona by the way and they just moved there last year. Thanks :) |

I live in Arizona and "yes" your parents must file their taxes if they are married, filing jointly and their gross income is at least: $15,000 OR their Arizona Adjusted Gross Income is at least: $11,000
If they do not meet that requirement they do not have to file. |

Yes you have to file. Perhaps you have made an error on the returns. If you have, your state tax office will detect it and that is another reason that they want you to send them the returns. |

How can it possibly add up so perfectly?
Unless there were below the income limit, they need to file. |

I would. Play it safe so that way they have less of a reason to audit you. |

If their income exceeds the state's requirement for filing a return they must file regardless of whether the owe, have a refund coming, or are even-up with the state. |

Ya. You should file the state as well. Good luck ;) |

I agree. I would file to prove you owe nothing. Even if it's just a matter of filling out the paperwork. It's the old CYA method of doing things. ;) |
