If you dont file your taxes by a certain time, what could the IRS do to you?

If you don't owe them money, nothing at all. Of course, they won't send you that govenment handout of the taxpayer's (including yours) money later this year.

If you owe them money, they can assess penalties, interest, throw you in jail, freeze your bank accounts, sell your house, your car, and put your wife and children out on the street.

Yes they can!

Missy
I think they'll charge you for a penalty and make you pay in installments with interest.

If you appear to be getting a refund, they won't pursue you--they'll let you make a donation to the national debt.

if you appear to owe, you will get a letter asking for the tax return. Future refunds will be held until it's filed. In some cases they'll file the worst possible return for you to force the issue and start the collection process.

If you do in fact owe, after 2 months the bill jumps by $100. At 5 months you owe 25% for failure to file. At 2 years, the bill doubles due to interest and failure to pay. The death spiral is terrible to get out of.

If you owe taxes and fail to file by April 15, you will be assessed a penalty and interest. If your tax bill is large enough they could prosecute you for income tax evasion.

If you don't owe any taxes or are due a refund, there is no consequence to not filing by April 15.

Fine you. The IRS is very powerful. Also if you don't file your 2007 returns you wont be eligible for the stimulus package.

I run my own biz So I try not to give to the KGB oh I mean the IRS less money as possible. Not file your taxes mean they can put a fine and or penalties on you. If you need more time in filling you can file an extension. The IRS is **NOT** a group of the government you want to owe money too.

If you don't file your taxes by April 15th, unless you file for an extension, they can charge you with penalties and if you owe enough, you may go to jail if you don't pay.

If you owe, then you will get a penalty. If you are due a refund, it really doesn't matter they won't do a thing. It's always smart to file anyways just for record.

If you are due a refund and don't file a return, the IRS will keep your money after three years. So the 2004 return has to be filed by 4/15/07 in order to get a refund.

Rich
There is 2 violations. Failure to file, and failure to pay. So even if you can't pay the money, you should still file. r
