Well, I don't know what those answerers above are talking about. There are a lot of people who don't pay any income tax but wind up getting a big refund due to various tax credits. If you don't pay anything in, but are entitled to various tax credits, you can wind up getting money back even without having paid anything in.

I think what your friend is talking about is the Earned Income Tax Credit (or Earned Income Credit). Unfortunately, you have to have SOME income in order to qualify. If you don't have a job and are not earning wages, you don't qualify.

No. She pays no income tax, therefore she will get no tax refund. They don't take tax from welfare checks.

Judy1
A refund? No, there's nothing to refund. She hasn't paid anything in. And to be eligible for an Earned Income Credit, she would have to have had earned income (that's why they call it what they do) and she doesn't.

And crazyem is wrong about the child tax credit. The most that can do is reduce your taxes to zero - and she already pays zero tax. Whoever gave crazyem a thumbs up on this completely wrong answer obviously has no knowledge of tax law, unfortunately not unusual here on this forum.

Income tax on what??? The answer is HELL NO!!! People get a return on what they paid out of their pay check.

bostonianinmo
No. Nobody receives income tax but the government. If your friend never had any income she will never pay any tax. People who get money at the end of the year either are getting a refund of overpaid taxes or are collecting one of the refundable credits. With no income she would not be eligible for any of those credits and if she never had a job she would not pay in any taxes to get a refund thereof.

ESL
they only give you a tax refund check if you've paid extra into the system that year... so if she hasn't worked and paid taxes, she won't get anything back.

I'm sorry, but I laughed when I read this. No, no one in the United States is eligible to receive income tax. However, if she has a job, then she is required to pay it. A tax is a payment to the government, not something that people receive.

in order to get income tax, you have to pay in more than your supposed to, which is what most people do, and you get back the amount you overpaid.

Your friend has payed NO income tax because she has no income, so she won't get anything.

When it comes to income tax, you can't get back what you haven't payed in...or overpaid, as is the case with income tax refunds.

GuErItA CoNsEnTiDa ♥
I WISH I COULD DO THAT BUT....i dont think thats possible

Jasmine G
no she will not be getting any kind of return. People who make less money than others (like me) and have children can get earned income credit. The reason that this was made was so that parents would want to get off of welfare and want to work. The more you work (earn) the more income credit that you can get up to a certain amount, hence the name earned income credit. Now a person who makes a lot more and can not qualify for earned income credit can get a child tax credit which is non-refundable and reduces a persons tax liability. If you have any more questions you can email me and I hope that this helps. oh another thing is, is that you can go to www.hrblock.com and there is a tax estimater, it will tell you how much you are looking at getting back for the year based on the way you answer the questions.

Income tax payable are only for those who has income. If your friend is not working - no income - she is not liable for any income taxes.

Chris
There are so many factors to a tax return, than just having a job. If she thinks she is entitled to income tax return, or if she thinks she owes money she should file. However, you can only get tax back, if you pay it in. It sounds like she never paid any taxes, therefore she would not be entitle to any returns. It would be best for her to speak with an accountant one on one if she has reason to file.

No. You have to have earned SOME income in order to be eligible for "Earned Income Credit". If she has a child and even earned a dollar in income, then she would be eligible for the credit.

If she made money doing some babysitting around the neighborhood, she could complete a tax return and claim the income, then see what the "earned income credit" would give her.

tzimmer3@sbcglobal.net
you tell her no, then tell her to get a job. she will need around 6 years of total income on the average later on in life to receive social security . first, get job. then child tax credit, then retire like the rest of us an hope there is money left to live on.

butch
no- to get a tax return you must first have a job to have taxes with held- in order to over pay taxes to get them back in the form of an tax return - be it local, state or fed

Glennette B
Well speaking from experience and unless the rules of being on welfare has changed the answer of getting back some income tax is....NO!! Unless she worked somewhere part time...but No, I don't think she is entitled to income tax. She's on welfare that means that the state is taking care of her.

amandica82
yea all of us working people have to pay for those people who like to pop out kids and not pay for them themselves... its called a "child tax credit" at least in michigan it is. I am not sure how much it is.. it changes every year.. but its a signifigant amount. I have never known my sister to have a job and she always gets a few thousand during tax time since she has 5 kids.. the more kids the more money (but i think there is a limit). Maybe thats why she wanted me to claim her kids on my taxes lol . but with one she will most definately get it dependign on what state shes in

heart&soul
income tax returns are refunds to the employee who paid to much in taxes for their tax bracket. If she has not worked, then she didn't pay taxes, and she surely didn't over pay, so she is entitled to nothing.(no refund). She is however, being paid welfare by those of us that do work and pay into taxes so she can get a welfare check!!!

Tell her to get a job and support her child. A person only gets a tax refund if they paid taxes. All of us that work and have taxes taken out of our pay is how your friend gets a welfare check. Do you think it's fair to work hard while part of your paycheck goes to other people who sit on their butt while we pay their way in life? I have a major problem with it.

LD
tell her she is a moron and needs to be fixed.

She can get a child tax credit if she claims. You can have zero technical income but still qualify for this.
