What is your filing status? Are you single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, widowed {and/or within certain filing frame/time}, do you have dependents, could you be considered a dependent of someone else, what age are you, are you disabled, how much taxes do you have withheld, do you work hourly, salary, any additional benefits {etcetera}, do you work in an exempt type profession or have certain benefits such as housing included in your pay, do you pay for health insurance {and if so is it pre-tax or post-tax money}, do you take the standard deduction for whatever your filing status is or do you itemize, and....

As for state, some states don't have any state tax, some only on such things as capital gains, while others vary {again, according to most of what was talked about for federal}.

To get a general idea for something like this, there is a lot of information that has to be considered. Your best bet is to run it through an online tax program, which you don't have to pay for unless you use it to actually file/send the tax work in to somewhere/someone.

There is no way to tell. How much was withheld? What deductions exist?

depends on what you paid in, how many deductions you have and how many ppl you claim

I don't think you understand what a refund is. Throughout the year, you have tax withheld from your paycheck. At the end of the year you calculate how much total tax you owe on what you made. If you had too much withheld, then you get your overpayment refunded.

It's like if you went to Walmart, bought $14 worth of items, and gave the cashier a $20 bill - the $6 you get back is just your overpayment. If you gave them $14, you wouldn't get anything back - if you gave them a $50 bill you'd get $36 back, but it's just your own money, not a gift Walmart is giving you.

It depends. How much did you pay in? Do you any dependants? Do you have exemptions such as student loans? There are variety of factors that could influence your tax return, and there is a possibility you may even owe money.

You need to provide more information. Some states have no income tax (like TN and WA, for example). Your federal tax rate depends on your withholding allowances: marital status, number of dependants, and whether or not you itemize deductions, (www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15.pdf).

Example: Single, 2008, $40K income would put you in a 25% tax bracket (could be lower if you have deductions). 25% of $40,000 is $10,000, (http://www.moneychimp.com/features/tax_brackets.htm).

If you owe $10,000 and you paid less, you could owe taxes rather than get a refund.

You are also eligible for Bush's "incentive" tax refund ($600 for single person).

You receive $600 if your single, $1200 if your married, and $300 for every dependent. Now, if you owe backed taxes or you owe the IRS money they will utilize your refund to pay off what you owe.
