If you make less than $2000 in a year, do you have to file taxes?
I sold some Mary Kay, and made 50% of my earnings...but it was no where near $2000.00

And I was told by my dad that if you dont make more than $2000 in a year then you don't have to file taxes

Im a single, stay at home mom. My fiance supports me and the kids so I dont have to work and spend my check on a sitter/nanny/daycare.

honestly, I dont even think I made 400.00! So I dont have to file?

My advice is to call a certified tax preparer and ask them because they'll know questions to ask you to give you the proper advice. (The people answering you in the forum are giving great advice too.)

By the way, on your MK website, there is a link for you to go to to print off your 2007 sales history. This provides everything your tax preparer needs. It tells them how much in taxes you paid, how much your earnings were, everything. (This information is only available if you do your Weekly Accomplishment Sheets weekly.) You, the independent contractor, don't have to pay quarterly taxes, it's done for you out of your sales. It's figured in and the company reports quarterly your taxes to the government.

I'm also a Mary Kay consultant and for someone that is doing this part time, married, and also has kids, I'm claiming everything just for the tax credit. The products I give away in classes are tax deductible, my mileage, my food receipts when I have lunch with a client, and the taxes on my product are tax deductible. The space where my product is stored and my desk where I work is deductible because it's in my home, as well as a portion of my mortgage (or rent if you rent) and a portion of all my bills can be counted towards your taxes. Being in Mary Kay literally dropped us into a lower tax bracket. Which was really good!

So while taking in advice from others on this forum, you could also call a certified tax preparer for your state to find out for sure what your state allows and what the government allows as well. Go to the library and see if they have any current tax books you can look through to see what applies too.

If you didn't make $400, then no you don't have to file. If you made more than that, you do.

You sold Mary Kay--this is self-employment income and you have a filing requirement as soon as your net earnings are $400 or more.

By the way, if you do have a filing requirement, your fiance can't claim you on his taxes. He might be able to claim the kids if they are biologically his. (If he claims the kids, then you *can't* file for EIC.)

Unless you paid the government taxes and want them back then no, based on your income.

I dont know how Mary Kay works but I'm sure they report to the IRS how much they paid you (so that they dont have to pay tax on that money)

but if you made $400 or more , then you have to file as self employed.

but with the exemption you get for your self, plus the standard deduction you will owe nothing.

too bad your fiance cant claim you until you two get married.

if you are self-employed - yes - if net income was over $400

Sorry-my original answer did not take into consideration that you paid no taxes in. If you are self-employed, and no taxes were deducted, you are required to file.

not unless you expect a refund

You still have to report it or its "under the table". You won't be taxed on it until you hit some where around $8700.
