Q. I'm eligible for a payment but I still owe federal income tax from a prior year. Will my payment be reduced?
A. Yes. For this purpose, the stimulus payment is treated like any other tax refund. This means that part or all of your payment can be used to pay past-due federal or state income taxes or non-tax federal debt such as student loans and child support. If this occurs, you will receive a letter explaining how the stimulus payment was applied.

If you owe the taxes and do not pay by the time that the rebate check is released, they will take the money and apply it to what you owe.

Yes. If you do not pay the entire amount owed before they send out the rebate checks, then they will take the rebate and apply it to the outstanding balance. If what you owe is not that much, I'd advise you to pay it asap.

Yes. It will be applied against your tax debt. Bush is helping you pay off your tax obligations.

If you owe the irs for 2007 taxes, its likely they will adjust that against the tax rebate that you might be eligible for

yes all back tax child support and student loans offsets they will take all or part of the rebate for the amount due sorry
Ms. Angel..
Per IRS website the stimulus rebate will be offset to any government debt. EVEN if you have an installlment agreement, per the Installment agreement states any and all refunds will be applied to your balance due.

They will deduct what is owed plus interest and if any is left, that's what you get.

I'm in that situation myself, I know that if you don't pay what you owe before April 15th...you will be penalized and owe more( late fees). I don't know about you but I would like to recieve the the whole amount from the stimulas check I hope to get!
Dr. Goldfish
Yea it might. Only if you have not pay them any thing. If you set a payment plain with them it might not.
