If you owe the IRS 20k will they investigate if you pay them in cash?
If you have not payed taxes in 5 years and owe 20k to the IRS and you walked with 20k in cash. Will they accept the payment with no questions ask or will they investigate where the money came from. If so how can I pay them.

IRS will send you a bill for each year. If you pay it no questions will be asked. Paying with huge amounts of cash is intrepreted as you want to irritate them. If you came in with a bucket full of pennies, you would be told they don't have to accept that much change or go roll them. A check would be preferred.

If you walk in with $20K cash, odds are that it will pique somebody's curiousity enough that they'll check into it.

The IRS does and will accept cash. But it really is not a good idea. With cash you have no proof that you paid. I recommend that you get a bank check or a money order of you do not have your own checking account.

Yes, the IRS could investigate if you paid your tax debt with cash and even if you pay with a check or money order. If your return show that you do not have the ability to have that kind of money the IRS will look to see where the money came from.

They would try to convince you like anything to get a cashier's check or money order, may even offer to drive you to the cheapest currency exchange. Cash is a big hassle.

BUT.......

They are required to take cash, if they can't talk you out of it. And required to give you a receipt.

IRS doesn't care, though they prefer checks to cash
any one transaction in cash more than $10,000 has to be tracked
however IRS cares that you declare your income (legal or not) and pay your taxes upon such income, not the source of your income

ASK Al Capone--he was jailed not for gun running or running speakeasies or running in Canadian booze or murder, but for tax evasion

Dear Kal,

Please stop smoking when you get on line....OF COURSE, they will question the source of your cash. AND IF YOU ARE LUCKY THEY WILL NOT REVIEW THE $20,000 YOU CLAIM IS THE DEBT DUE.

Pay them through an accountant or attorney. Bring your money in three increments of about $7,000 over the course of a month. See it is deposited into a client trust account. Have them submit your payment on a client trust account check.....

Future conversations with the IRS should only be conducted through the attorney or accountant to minimize criminal fraud, perjury or interference with government investigation complaints.

Good Luck

If ALL you money is under the table then you are probably fine, but . . . .any employer will send a list of the employees nd the amount of income paid even if it is on a 1099

But I guess I am confused by the "walked away with 20k". Are you saying that you didn't pay taxes for on a large sum?

Anyhow, I am sure they will contact you soon enough. It takes the IRS 4-5 years to catch up with tax evasion.

Did you file your taxes and just not pay or did you just not file? If receivedeved a lump sum of 20k then who ever gave it to you sent the government a 1099. Even a bank if there was a payout to a friend will send the IRS a notification that an amount of 10k or more was paid out.

They might audit you, they might not. You can call your local IRS agent.

Don't try to hide. I promise they will catch it eventually. I did taxes for many years and saw many clients get notifications on issues much smaller than yours.

It's a pretty sure thing that if they get their money they won't investigate where the money came. Really how could they it's absolutely none of their business where the money came from. There's nothing illegal about payin them in cash and they probably love it right? Well maybe not cause they don't have a balance to keep racking up interest charges on. Ahh, where did the money come from by the way??? ?

Shana - I think you are a little confused, he meant walked into the IRS with 20,000.

BJcohen - If the 20,000 came from a car accident settlement there's nothing the IRS can say, isn't taxable income. Are you a tax preparer??

My girlfriend owes $24K in back taxes and files each year. She makes over $150K yet does not own a home. I keep telling her it is bad to avoid the letters sent. Can you please explain what the result will be so she reaches out to them now.
