I'm sure that the individuals gave a "gift" of $10,000 - not actually a "tip". They can gift up to $12,000 to one person and the receipient will not be taxed. I think the media is putting the "tip" spin on it. They had a relationship that they built with this person - they didn't just walk-in, order pizza and leave $10k on the table.

Most restaurants require their employees to report 100% of tips anyway.

Whether the IRS knows or not, it is still income and subject to income tax.

Hell no!!!!

But the fact that it has been broadcast makes me feel amazed at the generosity and kindness of the lady who gave it to her, it's such a lovely gesture to help her pay for college.

However I repeat my former statement: HELL NO

I saw that in the news today, I'm sure when she saw it she flipped out, now she must pay the consequences for it. Good story though.

If its cash i wouldn't tell anybody, If its a check the bank will probably make you tell the IRS. Leave the press out entirely.

branjo_70
Of course I'd report it. Not only does the law require us to report it to the IRS, but it's the right thing to do.

I'm amazed to see so many unethical people posting responses here. So much for my faith in humanity.
