Yes. You can put anything you want to on a W4. You don't specify who they are until you file your tax return. To claim her, you have to provide over half of her support and her income has to be under a certain level. |

Maybe. How does your mother live? Where does the money come from to support her? If her total income is less than $3500 for the year, and if you provide over half of her total support, then you can most likely claim her as a dependent on your tax return. If she is living off her savings and investments or something, or from a pension, that money is her contribution to her own support so you'd have to be able to prove that you spent more than that of YOUR money on her support.
What you put on your W-4 is an estimate of what you'll owe for your tax return. If you can't claim her on your return though, and you put her on your W-4, you are likely to end up owing when you file your tax return. |

Maybe. Are you providing more than half her support? On your W-4 you claim allowances which affect your withholding. You don't list your mother by name. More important is whether you can claim your mother as a dependent on your tax return. Shiprepair has some good points on that issue. |

W4 is how many allowances you claim so your employer knows how much taxes to take from your paycheck. You dont list who dependents are on the form. The higher the number the less taxes taken out and the better chance of owing at the end of the year. |

Your mother can be your dependent under Qualifying Relative if you provide more than half of her support and she does not earn $3500 or more in 2008. Read: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/03/requirements-for-claiming-dependent.html |

You need to provide more than half her support so if she is getting welfare, disbility, interest, capital gains, rental income, or other income you probably can't. If her husband, boyfriend, parents, other children or someone else is providing support you need to prove you provide more than half. Even if she is supporting her self on unemployment or spending down her life savings you might not be providing more than half. |
