Im In a Tax Conflict what to do?
ok so i got my w-2 from my ex employer and well the wages that are on dont match with my last check stub. According to my last stub, wages reported on my w-2 are missing like $7,000 is it cuz i have been getting unemployment? what my ex employer has that i made is ridiculous and well i really didnt end in good terms with him so how do i approach this? Or is this rite? or what happens if i file my taxes and i made more than what it shows on my w-2?

The W-2 represents what the employer has paid to you for the year 2007 and what they withheld from you. If you received checks or income from another source, you will receive a 1099G which will tell you what your unemployment amounts were. This will go on another line of your return. Wait a few days to see if you receive this.

If you made more than what the w-2 says, the government will not have a record of it since your employer will be reporting the same numbers to the government as they sent to you.

Your situation seems to be you have received unemployment amounts which come from the State you live in. Once you get that information, you will be able to file your return.

I hope this was helpful.

Unemployment would have nothing to do with your W-2. But if you had pre-tax contributions for things like 401K, health insurance, or FSA's, that could explain the difference, and your W-2 might be correct.

chatsplas
Any received unemployment has NO effect on your W-2s. The state wsill send you a 1099-G for unemployment received. It is not uncommon for there to be differences between check stubs and W-2s, but that's a rather large difference. Check carefully to make sure you are comparing all the same things. Was there a cafeteria plan, a 401k, anything separate or special?
Think you need to contact your ex employer. The HR is generally where you go and they may be unaware of the terms of your departure. They have an obligation to issue correct W-2s and they are sent to IRS, so you need to get to the bottom of this--or accept their numbers. You can't file based on paystub if you have a W-2, and even if you didn't, not before mid-February.

bostonianinmo
Your W-2 has nothing to do with collecting unemployment. You'll get a Form 1099-G from the State for that.

If the W-2 is wrong you'll have to contact the employer and have them generate a corrected one.

Call the IRS and have someone review the W-2 with you against your paystub.

Did you remember to subtract pre-tax benefits like health care and tax deferred income like 401(k)s?

My paycheck is usually $5-7K more than my W-2. 15% to my 401K and $1500 in health care will do it.

ask the company for a correct w-2 because to under-report income in fraud - you can report them to the IRS if they don't fix it.

If they refuse go ahead & use the info on your last paystub & attach a copy not the orginal to your 1040

You should get a W-2 from the employer and a W-2G for the unemployment. I think you are thinking that everything will be in one, rather than you get 2, one from your employer and one from the unemployment authority.l

Make sure you are comparing the right numbers (in other words don't compare your net earnings to Box 1 look to gross earnings). Box 1 of your W-2 will match gross wages on your stub minus any qualified plans (like a 401k). You Box 1 wages may be lower than your Box 3 wages because you made qualified pre-tax contributions. Do you have an entry in Box 12 or 14 of your W-2. Did you get paid cash sometimes and not check? If he paid you cash then he's not properly reporting it to avoid his portion of social security and medicare. If you still feel there is a mistake you must go back to your employer to request a W-2C (corrected W-2).
