The maximum income which is subject to Social Security is currently $90,000, I believe. If the ceiling were removed, and our employees stopped raiding the fund, there would never be a problem.
There are people who say that the ceiling should not be removed or even raised. The reason they give is that people in higher income brackets don't get as much benefit as those in lower brackets. That argument is bogus They ignore the fact that everyone, regardless of income, pays the same amount of money to ride a bus, or buy a gallon of gas (indirect taxes), etc. Too much of the burden has been placed on people with middle and lower incomes. That, and raiding the fund, will be the cause of any problems that arise in the future, if they do.
The other poster is correct about the things that are covered by Social Security. Anyone who thinks they'd be able to get by on savings if hit by a catastrophic illness is sadly mistaken. If you had a stroke, how would you even begin to pay for all of the services you'd need with no job? Whatever you had managed to save would be eaten up in no time.
My friend had a massive stroke at the age of forty-nine. Her entire right side is paralyzed, and she's aphasic. She has to spend the rest of her life in a nursing home. Without Social Security insurance, she'd never be able to afford it. This kind of thing could happen to you, or someone you love.
We should demand that our employees (federal, state, and local) work for us, rather than corporate interests, since that's what they're paid to do.

The Social Security Trust fund fictional balance is expected to be depleted around 2038. At that time, incoming taxes will pay for approximately 75% of benefits. That means after the system goes bankrupt, you can expect payments equal to 75% of what is currently projected, in absence of changes to taxes or benefits.
What politicians conveniently leave out of the reform debate is that Social Security is more than just a simply retirement system. It also provides disability insurance and survivor benefits. Try buying all three benefits for the same price as your 6.2% payroll deduction rate. |

It may be there it may not. However, you still have to pay Social Security Taxes. Just like every other person that works hard and pays their bills. |

There are a lot of variables between now and your retirement that will dictate whether or not there will be adequate funding for social security.
There could be a complete tax reform like the Fair Tax. It would be interesting to see how SS is resolved then (with no input). We could have huge recessions (or even depressions) throwing us backward a century. Or, we could have prosperous times and earnings could help. Who knows.
One thing I'd like to point out (and some will NOT like this said) is that our (meaning 35 and under) generation is not in control of the political wheel that will guide what happens tomorrow. Are we an influence? Yes. But majority typically rules and right now that means Baby Boomers. Until they retire or die, their needs will be focused on first. We come next (or last). As with most things, we fix the short-term and never make good long-term plans to fix things.
If Social Security is 'fixed', it will probably be something one generation fixes for their predecessor. I'm just a hair younger than you are and am already quite sick of my parents friends telling me to 'keep working so someone is paying into the pot'. Gee thanks for passing the buck. |

Yes, absolutely, just as there will still be public schools, police, firemen, roads, bridges, armies, etc. These are all popular government programs which will continue.
It may be slightly different. For example, the age at which you can get it will probably rise, due to increasing longevity. |

Probably not. Invest all you can so you have financial stability at retirement age. |
