If you have no resources, you can't be expected to pay your debts. First check that it really is a County Court Summons and not a letter from a debt collecting firm dressed up to make you think it's from the Court. If it's a summons, you should reply asking for time to pay. The Court will order you to pay off so much a week, based on the figures you give them for your income and expenditure. Citizens Advice will help you complete the forms. |

So long as you keep in contact with the companies and offer to make any payments at all , they are usually quite happy to accommodate you as they are still getting their money back no matter how slowly.
I know this because years ago I had a decent job, house with mortgage, overdrafts and bank loans. Money was a stretch but I was coping. Then I had a nervous breakdown and couldn't afford to pay anything near where I was before. That was about 7 years ago. I am still paying back a bank loan and a central heating installation loan at around £5 per week for each and I'll probably be paying this well into my 60's. But the point is they are willing to accept smaller payments so long as you can show you are trying to pay it back. Thats all that really matters to them. You have to remember to keep in touch with the companies involved though.
I suppose there is always the "declare yourself bankrupt" route you could go down but I would say this is a last resort as it will affect your credit rating for years to come.
Best thing to do is to take any paperwork you have regarding the companies you owe money to and go to the Citizens Advice Bureau. They can contact the companies on your behalf and they will keep a proper record of any arrangements made, etc.
Whatever you decide to do, I wish you luck.

You pay them, that's what happens.
Do you think that you don't have to pay them because you are on benefits? Ha! Your probably on more money than me if you take into account that you don't have to pay your mortgage, council tax etc!
Loans? catalogues? What are they? You've probably got a credit card too!!
Where as I have to pay my debts every single month, you'll just have to offer £2 a week and they'll leave you alone. |

You will get a County Court Judgement against you. Speak to Citizens Advice and show the court you are trying to deal with the problem |

make an appoitnment at your local citizens advice they can help you by writing to companies and some of your debt may be completely removed or if not they can sort out a repayment plan for you. if you show willing then you debtors may give you more time to pay. and a small amount from you is better than nothing at all. hope that helps, louise x |

you probably dont stand anywhere!!! as long as you agree to pay them back you cant be jailed! just explain that you can only afford £20 a week e.g and they will divide it between the companies you owe to. they will work out your money i.e outgoing and incomes and work out how much you need to live on! good luck x x x |

DONT PANIC! - The companies have taken court action to secure a county court judgement (CCJ) against you. Sit down and do a Budget Plannner (monies in and out each month), this will establish how much you could afford to pay your creditors each month. If you submit it to the courts with a proposal of how much you can pay, demonstrated by your budget planner they will normally agree payment at that set amount. Once this agreement is made in court you MUST keep up repayments and not default on it as the company will go back to the courts who in turn will instruct baillifs to cease goods to the value of the debt, |

my advice would be to see a solicitor who deals in debt problems, as you are on benefit you should get legal help |
