In the U.S., do I really have to have my taxes sent in by the 15th of April, even if I am getting money back?

winetaster6
No you do not and there will also not be any penlties for not doing so if the government owes you money. They always owe me so I usually only file every 3 or 4 years and then get lots of checks at once..

Wow i just saw all the responces and cant believe the misinformation out there..
You do not need to file by the 15, or the 17th or whatever.. for that matter you dont need to file at all if you dont want you money back. Your only obligation is to PAY taxes by the 17th of this year. Normally its the 15th

la buena bruja
If you know for sure that you'll get a refund, you won't have any penalties for filing late.

Winetaste.. is correct, if you do not owe money, you do not need to file by the 17th (this years due date). You have up to 3 years to file actually.

See section 6511(a) of the Tax Code

robee
One time I was getting a refund,I filed about 2 weeks late and didn't get penalized. I wouldn't push it if I were you.

No, you can send in your taxes at any time after the year is over. But, if you owe money to the IRS they will add penalties and/or interest on top of the taxes owed until it is paid in full. If you are owed money you have only 3 years from the original date the return was due, or 3 years from and extension to get the refund. If you wait longer than 3 years, you lose out on the refund. And of course, if you are owed money and you send in your return before the 15th of April, chances are you will get your refund quicker.

really, unless you file for an extension you will get penalties

girlwhoknowsitstrue
The due date is April 17th this year, but you do have to fill it out - even if you are receiving a refund, you can still get a penalty for not filing on time. If you can't do it on time, then file an extension.

~Me~
Yes... but you can file an extension easily and that'll give you the extra time you need.

oltmprch
That's what the law says, no matter whether you are getting money back or not, unless you file for an extension, April 15 is the deadline for filing.

However, this year the 15th falls on Sunday, so I think the deadline will be the 16th.

runs_with_scissors
Yup, except it's the 16th this year, 'cause the 15th is on a Sunday.

Yes you do. If you need more time, file for an extension.

kymberlee12276
yep sure do......except this year you have until the 17th

SG Elite
Yes, your Returns need to be in by April 15th.

emt_dragon339
it's the 17th this year, and yes you have to file even with a return, failure to do so will result in penalties and interest deducted from the omeny you are owed
