Luxury items attract Value Added Tax at 17.5%. Luxury items include everything except basic unprocessed foodstuffs (prepared foods are taxed), children's clothes Until they reach the size of small adults) and books.
Some less luxurious items attract a reduced rate of VAT (5%). These include domestic fuel (gas and electricity).
And some really decadent luxuries attract higher rates of tax, such as alcohol, tobacco, petrol and deisel.
Of course there are other things that we don't pay tax on but pay tax for, such as refuse collections, water, the right to watch TV. |

Try finding anything in this country that is NOT taxed. Why are we part of Europe when we pay far higher tax on everything in the consumer world, pay for all road/bridge strengthening for European giant lorries, abide by all Europe's dictated rules and regulations when the rest of the EU ignores them, allow all the immigrants in when Euro countries don't, etc.etc.etc. Worst of all we are paying for free housing, education, translation, hospital care, food and clothing and family allowance for all the immigrants when our own young people cannot afford the most basic housing. We are also paying for the huge retirement pensions for all local government employees via Council Tax as well as lining politicians' pockets with their huge unjustified expenses. Quite shocking isn't it? Time for a rebellion I think.
