Truffle shuffle | In the uk, why is there a system that when you start a new job you get paid in arrears.? |
I can understand that you need to do the hours first so they can tot them up and then get paid but there really is no need for it is there? Additional Details No you absolute spanners!! I have just started a job that I get paid weekly on a friday but i will not get paid my first wage until the second friday (hence weekly in arrears) |

Why would anyone pay in advance? (apart from IBM who my hubby works for, who are American anyway). All companies do this. It's the way the world works.. you do a task, then you get paid for it. |

We used to call this working a week in hand. I didn't think anyone still did this. But you asked the reason why. It goes back at least to the fifties.
When you work for someone there is a legal contract between you. Some of the provisions have minimum requirements laid down in law. Notice is one of these.
To protect you from hardship if the employer just threw you out he must give a certain period of notice. This should give you some time to find another job. If he fails to give you notice then he must still pay you for that period. If he does not you and sue for the amount.
Although the consequences are not so drastic it can still cost your employer a lot of money if you just fail to turn up for work. This is especially true where the worker is on a production line or a building site. So you have to give notice too - usually one week if you are weekly paid.
If you fail to give notice then the employer can charge you for the week's money he has had to pay someone else to do the work. Back in the fifties and sixties (and earlier, I suspect) most workers spent their money each week and had little, if any, savings. So the chances of the employer getting money from the ex-employee was virtually nil.
So the concept of the week in hand developed. If you gave the proper notice when you left you would receive two weeks money. This would cover you for the missing week at the new job. If, however, you left without giving notice the employer could keep the week in hand and everything was square. |

To force you to give a month notice if you wish to leave. So they always have in hand a monthly pay. |

Are you suggesting we get paid before we even do the work????
I'd be getting a new job every week if that was the case!! Go in on the Monday, get paid, leave on the Tuesday!! |

i think you mean working a week in hand, if you start on a monday and usually get paid on friday how can the wage clerk work out everyones wage in about 5 minutes before you go home, this is why they do it |

To make sure that you turn up for the rest of the week.!!!!
No employer is thick enough to pay you in advance and never see you again after they've paid you.
Use the grey matter between your ears before posting stupid questions. |

Its so they can take the tax off, as it gives the backroom staff time to work out how many hours you worked in a particular week or month....also it allows you to give your notice that you want to leave and you have extra money to tie you over until you get that new job.....yes its hard at first, but you get used to it.
Edit
As for other answers, you are not asking for pay in advance...its when you work for a month and they dont pay you until the end of the following month....thats what being paid in arrears means, and I assume that is what you mean. |

Bud is right. If you think you can institute a system so that your employer CAN pay all its staff over a couple of minutes at the end of every Friday, out of the week's takings that probably haven't even reached the employer's bank account yet, you ought to be a creative accountant. You could then be paid monthly in arrears. |
