Income tax: Do I have to get a W-2 for 1 day of unupaid work?
I worked 1 and a quarter of a day at a company. They deducted the cost of my hardhat, gloves, tools, etc. from my first paycheck. The cost of my physical/drug test was also deducted when I decided to leave. Needless to say, all those debts ate my check up.

Do I have to claim even though I was never paid?

if they didn't pay you, I'd forget the whole thing. Unless money changed hands you don't need to report it. If you want to be a stickler, and make the company do extra work, you can make them give you a w-2, but that would be like making you pay for a drug test that they require you to take.

Did you keep the safety equipment when you left the job? If you did, then you can't deduct their cost from your taxable income. If they kept everything when you left, then you should probably ask a tax pro and they can probably show you how to deduct this to offset your income. You shouldn't be paying taxes if you came away from the job with nothing.

edit: I've noticed an answer mention that if your earnings are under $600, you don't have to file. That is NOT true. Your employer does not have to send you a W-2 if you earned less than $600, but you are still required by law to report this income.

You worked. You got paid. You get a W-2.

The employee business expenses, unfortunately, go on schedule A and probably won't change your tax bill any.

If your net pay was less than $600.00 the employer is not required to issue a W-2 and you are not required to file
