I dont see anything wrong with it...if you want to work hard all your life to make sure your kids end up ok,,,well that good on you.
What does DISGUST me is this bloody money grabbing goverment taking 40% of your earnings which you have already paid tax on...what right do they have to do this.
This is money youve worked hard for,to pass on to your children...and they wonder why theirs bad feeling towards them. |

everything we inherit has already been taxed at some point, so it is unfair to tax it again. |

To me, its not whether its good or bad, its where you set the bar. Estates above how much ? What percentage should be taxed ? As long as it is not punitive, its a good thing. |

The family property should be exempt from IHT as it currently is exempt from capital gains tax. Other properties, holiday homes etc should be included and the level should be set to exclude ordinary hard working people who have paid tax all their lives. My suggestion would be exclude family property and set tax ar £500,000. |

As an originally Labour and more socialist idea... I can actually see why it is sensible and reasonable.
If you take it that the point is that everyone should be rewarded for their own success in life, and have to make their own way in the world - as opposed to archaic practices in which wealth is stored in families and passed down through the generations – the it makes sense, and is sound. Who better to tax than the people that don’t need it, and haven’t earned it? You have to pay for public services with something!
That said, it’s a kick in the teeth when it actually affects you… |

we have already paid tax on most of our belongings so why should we pay again, & so much, if we must have it the start rate needs to be lot higher (house prices alone are taking almost everybody over the threshhold). Start at £750k & increase in line with house prices. the rates at which they are then taxed should be £750k - £1mil 10% £1mil - £2mil 20% & £2mil upwards 40% |

I have no real problem with it in principle.
I don't understand the comments from people who believe it should not be imposed because their income has been taxed already. Don't they have computers, mobile phones, etc? Generally money is taxed when we receive it (usually income tax) and again when we spend it (VAT).
In this country we do not have a wealth tax. Tax is imposed when money moves from one person to another. The advantage of this system is that it is usually easier to identify these situations.
Inheritance tax is good from an administration point of view. It is very difficult to deny that the transfer of money has taken place because it is triggered by a death. Also the taxpayer is not likely to complain as he is already dead!
As to the actual rates and reliefs I don't think I will comment. Let's just say if it were up to me the system would be a bit different. |

I'm in favour as it's a progressive form on taxation. Plus there enough ways to reduce your liability. |
