i would say give them a ring, for two reasons, firstly, it was their mistake, if you haven't got it to repay, they need to know so they can take appropriate action rather than just assume you're ignoring them and send bailiffs. secondly, because you say you were a single parent, so are you claiming child benefit? if so, there are some scam letters going out demanding payment by january, so for all we (on answers) know, this letter could be a scam letter. £1200 is a pretty round figure...
i personally think you're best off ringing them and finding out if the letter is legitimate, and if so, then explain you simply haven't got it to fork out in one go, you need a couple of days to see if you can sort something out. make no promises to repay and don't tell them you're seeking advice but use this couple of days to speak to the CAB like the others said. i say don't tell them because that's no-ones business but your own, all the revenue need to know is that you acknowledge the letter and you're working on it. the CAB help you work out a realistic figure to repay monthly/weekly too which once worked out and given to the revenue in writing stating you sought advice, is more acceptable than offering a random figure of repayment, so they are worth the phone call if nothing else.
good luck, hope it turns out ok |

I was a bankruptcy clerk and people were declaring bankruptcy because the gov over paid them and then wanted the money back and they could not pay it.
How can they expect people who have no money and get money from the gov to be able to pay money back if the reason they get the money is because they have no money in the first place.
It was terrible people lost everything because of this gov mistake and it ruins your life if you bankrupt yourself. To start with they rarely write off your debts they can take up to sixty percent of your non essential income for up to three years after you are declared bankrupt to pay off the amount.
There are all sorts of other sneaky things like this. Unfortunately this situation wasn't your fault but you have been badly affected by it, I don't know what to suggest because even if you pay it off they will just say that they over paid you again some time in the future and you will have to spend the money that they give you. If you can do claim it any more, I know that sounds stupid but they will just use it to get more money from you in the long run. I seen it happen it isn't pretty. I had women with children crying at me and women with babies crying in the back ground telling me that they were having their homes taken away because of this gov c""k up. The gov should be in prison what do they want little kids to starve or something. |

They are making alot of mistakes
Write to them and ask them for full written reasons of how the overpayment exists and request that they refrain from further recovery action for the time being
They usually dont bother replying or chasing any further but if they do ask CAB to check their reply |

my payments got stopped compleatly by them as they said i was over paid but they are letting me pay it back by them not paying me this was about a year ago. i have heard that they are asking for full payment now from some people and i don't think there is anything you can do. phone them and try and arrange paymentplan or go to citezens advice. |

In 2005 the whole system was in meltdown. Speak to the CAB (google them) and you should be able to make an arrangement to pay in installments or have the money deducted from your current claim. |

With time pressing, take some time off and go and visit your locl tax office with any / all papers that yo have about the payments. remember to take any certificates, banks statements, marriage, child cerificates or benefit book with you,but only let them have copies of them, do not let them keep them.
Good luck, MD |

As most people have said you must get down to the CAB, explain everything to them and they will help you complete the necessary forms to fight the overpayment. Many mistakes are made because the system doesn't work properly and if it is their mistake you are not liable to pay it back. Good luck |

I don't know what to suggest, my dear. The Bast*rds got me this year too, and again for a 2005 overpayment - or so they reckon! Thing is, I can't remember that far back, and I can't prove anything, so I'm paying mine off £50 a month.
I love the way it's handled by their debt recovery department, as if you hadn't paid something. IT'S THEM THAT MADE THE MISTAKE - AS USUAL! |
