Irs tax rebate question.... am i eligible?
i am 18 years old and wroked 8 months in the year of 07. i did not claim seperately my dad still claimed me as a depndant. he stated hhe would get more money back that way than i would claiming by myself, so i said ok . so i only got 300 back on my taxes ( just the federal they took out) when my dad asked the tax person if i would be eligible for the rebate they said no. is this true and if so is it because i was claimed or what? i tihnk my dad is really cheating me out of alot of money if i dont get some back because i got claimed as a dependant instead of filing by myself

Amanda
Because your dad is claiming you as a dependant it's kinda of screwing you over. Next year you should ask the tax professional that you see if it's worth it. My parents kept claiming my sister (who is 20) and she was upset because her refund was only $300. So they talked to their tax professional and found out that it wasn't helping them as much as they thought. So she got to refile and claim herself and my parents just took the small loss. She got back an additional $650 on her refund last week and now she qualifies for the tax rebate.

you will not be eligible because someone else claimed you as a dependent and your father will not be eligible for extra for you because you are over the age of 17

No, dependents aren't eligible.

You would have only gotten $300 for the rebate, not the maximum $600, if you weren't a dependent, since you didn't pay any net federal income tax. And on your tax return, if you had been independent and claimed yourself (like if you lived on your own and supported yourself) you wouldn't have gotten any more back than you had withheld, so if you got that back, you got as much as you would have gotten either way.

And you and your dad don't just get to decide who claims you - if he meets the rules to claim you and he probably does, you aren't allowed to claim yourself even if he DIDN'T claim you. He's cheating you? I don't think so! Sounds like you were claimed as a dependent because you ARE a dependent.

Missy
Because you are over 17, even though your dad claimed you, neither him or you will be getting a stimulus check(for you). Sorry!

MukatA
No you will not get rebate. Your parents will not get any rebate for you as you are over 17.

Those who did not get full tax rebate this year, will get remaining money in 2009 when they file their 2008 return and qualify.

For information on stimulus tax rebate schedule, the eligibility and how much rebate you will get read: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/are-you-eligible.html

Well...you ARE a dependent aren't you? How are you being cheated? If you want to not be claimed then feel free to move out and pay taxes like everyone else.
