Know you know not to get a RAL. If you were in a simple income tax situation, you could get your taxes done for 50-110, depending upon where you went. With HSBC, they may have charged you about 175 if you were in a simple situation. So that means you paid 816,.54. That's even worse than H&R ripoff and jackson-nitwit.

Just do Turbotax, FreetaxUSA, Taxbrain or Taxact. eFile on the Federal only and the free Federal eFile. Then go to your State website. You can find it in any search engine. You type in your State along with "department of taxation". E.g, I typed in Maine Department of Taxation on yahoo and "Maine Revenue Services" came up. That's the government body that collects income tax {and I believe all taxes} for the State of Maine. I say all of that because
several States do not charge on their website to do income taxes. So you may be able to iFile {eFile} the State return for free. If the IRS accepts your return, you should get your State back in 5 business days and your Federal in 10-15 business days depending upon how late in the season. This also depends upon the software not messing up. You have to keep checking to make sure it went through. I've bought very expensive software before (drake) and it didn't go through. I got all kinds of lies and excuses for why it didn't go through, depending upon which rep answered the phone.

I work for a CPA firm in Mississippi and, although I don't know the details of your tax return, I think $991 is rather steep. We charge $150 for a simple return with only 1 W-2 and very little other information (such as 1099s, itemized deductions, tax credits, etc.) As the return becomes more complicated, the price rises to $200-300. I don't think I've ever prepared an individual return for more than $300, and I've prepared some pretty complicated returns. I'm sure the price of tax return preparation varies from one region of the country to another, but almost $1,000 for an individual return sounds pretty expensive to me regardless of the cost of living where you reside. If your return merely consists of basic information (perhaps a W-2 and a few 1099s), you should definitely try filing for free on irs.gov next year!

Personally I would say yes. I'm not sure what w RAL is or how mush it should cause on a regular basis but $991.00 sounds like they took out some additional charges that you were not aware of. Next year try turbotax.com. This way you can do the taxes yourself, you get free help from tax professionals over the phone if you need too, and you should not pay more then 100 dollars at the most depending on how many forms you fill out. Also you have a chance to go over your on your own taxes before you file.

Did you request a rush on the refund check? This could also be a charge which all companies make their own price.

You confusing two different things: tax preparation fees and fees to HSBC for taking a loan (RAL or IRAL).
Look through your papers. You will find a couple of pages that called Loan Agreement where your original refund is listed, as well as all the fees, including taxprep fees and the amount you should get. You signed these 2 pages. It should not be a surprise.

ponek99
holy crap girl why did you go with a ral ? did you read the intrest rate on the form . you shouldnt rely on the refund thats how peolpe get in to trouble

tia
sweety when you use a bank product such as a RAL you will be subject to an extra fee. depending on how large ur refund is. You need to read the fine lines next time. Not all that glitters is gold.

bostonianinmo
Those RALs have heinously high fees. On top of that you probalby told them to withhold the tax prep fees from your refund. There's an additional fee for that. This is a major rip-off as you have learned. Next time, forget the RAL and pay the tax prep fees in cash.

HSBC is telling you that you don't owe them any money because they consider your account paid in full -- from your tax refund.

Read the contract that you signed at the tax place. It will explain ALL of the fees and charges to you.

What forms did you have to use inorder to file your taxes?

If you had a lot of 1099's and deductions forms it is possible.

just me
The bank is only going to refund you what IRS sent them minus they charges you signed you would pay when your return was prepared. There are no hidden fees and you get a printout of how you refund and charges are broken down. Look in your packet from H&R and find the paper that shows what fees you are being charged and what your refund was suppose to be.

I am guessing the IRS did not refund the same amount H&R Block has on your return. IRS will send you a letter letting you know why your refund amount was changed.
