SunkenShip | Is H & R Block worthwhile? |
I've never used H & R Block or any of these tax outfits before. Are they good? Do they cost a lot of money? Additional Details Here's why I'm considering going to a professional rather than just doing it myself.
I got married and had a child last year so I want to get the max amount of deductions. I suck at the tax code so I wanted some insight.
It sounds like some are saying H & R would be okay (But not too many are telling what the price is) and others say they're a rip-off. Would I just be better off with a CPA? |

H & R Block, Jackson Hewitt, etc. are like the fast food of tax preparation. They are fast, not too expensive, and they do an okay job. If your return is complicated, then, it is worthwhile to pay for a CPA to prepare your return.
If you have a fairly simple return and make less than $40,000 a year, the IRS has a program to have your taxes prepared at no charge. The program is called VITA (volunteer income tax assistance). The preparers are certified by the IRS through a training program and series of tests. Go to the irs.gov website and you can find out more information. The following is a link to the VITA page.
http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=107626,00.html
The operators at the 1-800 number on that page will help you to find a VITA location near you and can even help you to make an appointment. Most locations operate by appointment and also take walk-in clients. |

They can be. Disclosure: I work for H&R Block and love what I do for a living. But, they do more than just tax preparation. When you go in, they'll take a look at your tax return, discuss how retirement savings might benefit you, what types of savings might best fit your needs, and whether you could benefit from more specific help from a financial advisor. You can meet with a financial advisor (series 7 licensed) for free if you are a tax client. We can advise you on things that might be deductible that you might not have thought of. We can talk to you about changes coming up in future years and how they might affect you.
BUT, you need to do a little legwork. Call and make an appointment with someone who has been with the company for at least 5 years. Talk to the person who will be doing your return, let them know what kind of information you'll be bringing, and ask if they have any suggestions for you at that time. If you have any special situations, ask them if they've dealt with those things before.
IF you get the service you're supposed to, it's well worth the price you pay for a professional to give you the advice. If, for some reason you don't, ask to speak with the Office Leader and they will help you out for sure. It's not just about tax prep, it's about helping you make the most of your hard-earned dollars. |

H&R B charges a lot of money for something that you can do yourself. Really... its not all that complicated if you just get down to it and read the instructions. Every line has an instruction and you can get online assistance in a lot of different places. |

This year I am planning on doing my taxes on line I have used mainly HR block in the past and The fees are high I end up paying about 300 in tax preparer fees and extra for the ral. All I have is one W2 form so I think I will come out better doing it on line But if you have complex taxes you might benefit from using them but they do charge depending on how much you get back and I usually get back somewhere in the6000 dollar range and end up only receiving about 5200 of the money |

I'll argue strenuously with the Block associate here. Their "financial counselling" services are largely limited to pushing Block-sponsored IRAs of dubious value and overall poor performance. In fact there have been lawsuits over the way that they push those IRAs. Employees who don't push them are subject to disciplinary actions including termination of employment; I know 3 folks who were terminated for exactly that reason by local Block affiliates.
The tax prep mills do a passable job on simple returns but a generally terrible job on complex returns. And they'll never override an IRS revenue ruling. Revenue rulings legally only apply within the IRS; taxpayers are free to interpret the law their own way as long as they are prepared to take the issue to Tax Court if the IRS refuses to see it their way.
The only thing I can say about the tax prep mills is that they are consistently inconsistent. The vast majority of taxpayers who go to them could e-file for free through the IRS website or buy off-the-shelf software and do it themselves for 1/4 of the cost or less.
People with complicated returns or who wish to challenge the IRS' interpretation of the law (and you CAN win these!) should engage the services of a CPA, tax attorney, or EA who specializes in the area of tax law that affects them. Their fees are generally higher than the tax prep mills are but you're getting a level of expertise that the tax prep mills can rarely provide AND you get professional represenation with the IRS and in court that the tax prep mills simply won't provide. |

I have used H&R block for years.....(online services) and they give you options of how many of their services you would like to take, this affects the price. There is also a link to H&R block on Irs's website to file for free, but you have to be under a certain income level. They will check for errors and give you the option of checking to see if you qualify for certain things. Very easy to use. Good luck |

We've used TaxCut for years. This is the software designed by H&R Block. It's really easy. Just load it on your computer and answer all of the questions. And it's way cheaper!!! I guess the question is how soon do you need your refund? We file on-line and get ours back in a decent amount of time. You know what they say... time is money! File it yourself and keep the extra $$. |

IF you dont feel like being bothered with taking an hour out of your time to do it yourself, OR you dont think you can get the max refund on your own...just use them!
They are cheap and effective...IF you made 50K or less last year:)
I used them when i was in college making 40k and under....
I know it sounds like a lot for a college kid, but, what was I to do with no help from the home front??? |

For less then the price, get the software for 20 USD average from either of the two popular venders. They use the same software in a commerical version.
Just plug in the info and you have a total in a short time, if you have all your records and reciepts.
However they are good (H&R) and they charge flat rate plus per page over the standard form. |

H&R Block is more expensive than an independent tax preparer. |

The high price that everyone is referring to is for H&R Block's rapid refund type service. I get my taxes done there, and have a regular efile, not rapid refund or any of that, and it usually cost me around 30 bucks. Same as the software, and I do none of the work. |
