Irony Of Poe
Is anyone else annoyed that they won't get the economic stimulus check because they are a dependent?
I just checked the IRS site and it said that you are not eligible for any rebate if you can be claimed as a dependent. That means that I don't get a check as a 22 year old college student even though I earned my own money. To top it off, your parents only get an additional $300 in their check only if the dependent is 17 or younger. Therefore, anyone 18-24 who is in college gets no rebate in any form. Doesn't this seem like age discrimination? Isn’t it bad enough that I don't get to claim myself on my taxes, why do they have to rub it in and not give me any part of this huge package.
Just wanted to complain.

The poor college kids could sure use that $600.
I'll remember this when voting.

I suspect ALL college age dependents are annoyed.

Although you will be ineligible for the rebate as a dependent, you may still benefit under the plan.

While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009.

I am retired and the cost of living keeps going up but I don't see any increase in my check. Who cares about that little check that the government is giving away. It is not going to stimulate the economy, it's just a giveaway like welfare and the likes. It is you and I who are paying for it anyway. Our president doesn't care about these things, he has plenty of money. Oil is the biggest problem in our economy today.

Age discrimination is LEGAL unless you're over 50.
Who said IRS rules have to make any sense? They were written by Congress.

Since the government is the one giving out the money, they are the ones that get to set the rules. Things aren't fair sometimes... its a good life lesson.

i don't think your parent will received it.......cz your OVER 17yrs old.........read the part that they have certain age limit.

if you file most likely u'll be the one who's going to get the rebate even your parent claim u(plus aslong u earn atleast $3000).........but bcuz your over 17yrs old they won't get that additional credit.

it's not true that everyone 18-24 and in college won't get a rebate. only if you're a dependent on your parents return. all the students who are on their own and make at least $3,000 will get a rebate.

If you are making money, why are you not filing your taxes? If you filed, you should get the check.

You can appeal to your parents to give to you whatever rebate amount they get for you.

It's not all that much anyway.
