IBAmyB | Is anyone else shocked by how many people EXPECT refunds before they even file??? |
If people fill out their W-4s correctly and then they should see very little back or owe very little. You can ven claim EIC on your W-4s, right?
I personally rather have that "refund" as part of my check every time instead to "struggling" to make ends meet until April every year!
Am I weird for doing our taxes that way? |

I totally agree with you. All of these people have not had the use of the money for the entire year. However, they think that they MUST have the money NOW. Like waiting an extra month or so to get their W-2 to file their taxes is going to cure their current financial situation. There have been plenty of studies to show that all people do with the money that they haven't been using for over a year (better known as a tax refund) is just wasted on stupid purchases. These are the same people that when they come into a large amount of money blow through it in a year or so.
When it comes to W-4 filing's, I usually give a standard answer that allows people to come close to breaking even.
So, are you weird? Yes, you are. Welcome to the club. I hope you know the secret handshake. |

I have a cousin with 5 kids (seriously, she's 27).
She maps out what she's going to spend her $7,000 on each year. She usually ends up buying expensive clothes, makeup, shoes, etc. It's normally gone by the next month. Right after, she goes right back to living paycheck to paycheck. |

Many people feel it is just better to expect a refund as oppose to trying to pay a tax bill. This is why I pay a little extra through out the year. |

I'm not shocked but I do think these people are weird. I'm heartened by some of the other Answerers here who also think it's weird. I thought I was the only one who takes the view it's better to keep hold of my money throughout the year rather than give the Government a free loan of my money until a tax refund would be due. |

Most people are not very informed on taxes and the way they work. Personally, I have mine setup similar to you. That way, I have more money to invest throughout the year. So by the time I would have gotten a lump sum, I have saved little by little with interest, and it ends up being more than what a big tax return would have been. |

You are doing it the smart way. Better to have the money in a savings account because you got it in your paycheck, than to have the gov. hold onto it for their interest.
Same goes for Mortgage escrow accounts, etc (unless they give you the interest to the account...)
I had a room mate in college that had no taxes taken out of his check, calculated what he needed to pay, put that into an account, and paid (I think) quarterly. Seemed to work well for him, but that seems a bit risky to me...
But the gov. gets to make money by scaring people with owing, and by giving them the thrill of giving their own money (less any interest) back to them at the end of the year. |

I like to get my refund!.. yes, I know if I had less held out the government would not have my money interest free.. but, I would not "save" whatever I had "extra." from my paycheck. So, I know I will have a refund... and what do I do with my refund? Pay off my interest free credit card! |
