Mr Nice Is A Proud New Daddy | Is everybody automatically entitled to a state pension? |
What would happen if they paid no income tax or national insurance in all their life, would that person still be entitled?
Thank you. |

You need to have at least 11 qualifying tax years of national insurance payments to get some of the basic state pension. To get the full basic state pension you need about 40-45 years depending on whether you are male or female. This is due to be reviewed soon, which may mean that full basic state pension is obtainable after about 30 qualifying years of national insurance payments.
Income tax is not relevant to state pension. National insurance payments are.
You can buy missed years, however it is more cost effective to pay national insurance.
By my calculations it is generally worth buying missed years, however with impending changes to legislation people with a number of years may find it pointless. (eg. if you already have 30 years qualifying why pay for more when the rules might change!) |

Married women are entitled to a pension, in their own name, as a result of their husband's contributions.
Residents in HM prisons get full credit for their contributions, and could, in theory get a pension without making any contributions.
The underclass who spend their lives on the dole could in theory obtain a pension, as they receive full credits, but I hope the revolution comes before that happens! |
