nobody_at_all | Is filing taxes online idiot proof? |
i wanted to go online and try to file this year, but i've never done it before and i'm afraid of screwing up. please help, i'm young and dumb. :) |

Nothing is "idiot proof" for taxes. The Federal Tax Code is complex and even geniuses make mistakes.
Don't worry about being young. You have to start sometime. Just be careful and follow the instructions and ask for help if you are unsure.
If your adjusted gross income was $54,000 or less in 2007, you can use Free File to prepare and e-file your taxes free online:

You'll be OK, just take a good look at everything you enter before you hit "ENTER" or "SEND".
Nothing is idiot proof - and that includes taking it to a preparer. Anybody can key in a name or number wrong. |

No. Like any system, it's "garbage in, garbage out." If you enter incorrect information on line the affect will be the same as putting the same incorrect information on a paper return and mailing it in.
Most errors come from not reading the instructions and prompts carefully. The second most common source of errors is misinterpreting the instructions or reading someting into them that isn't there.
Filing online is pretty simple for most taxpayers. Just be sure to read the instructions and prompts CAREFULLY and ensure that you understand the question before you answer it. |

It depends whether you understand the questions, fill in the right numbers in the right slots, or have any special circumstances they might not cover.
I always download the instructions and forms and do it on paper (PDF fill-out forms if available) first. If online comes out with the same answer for refund or amount due, I am ready to submit it electronically. If not I go back and see if I misunderstood or made a math error.
If all you have is W-2 income and maybe some 1099-INT from a bank account, it should be a no brainer. But it also depends whether somebody claims you as a dependent. |

It should help you through step by step. Nothing's ever idiot proof, but as long as you read all the instructions, you should be fine. |

Not idiot proof, but if you have your papers ready and go through it once, you will be all right with Taxbrain, Taxact, Turbotax or FreeTaxUSA and may be a few others. I say "once" because if you have to change an entry, the software goes through the questions all over again and you some times wind up with two forms at the end of that particular session. So it makes the user uneasy, particularly if you are doing depreciation, for example.
eFile on the Federal only and the free Federal eFile. Ignore the "upgrades" and gimmicks and it will be free. Then go to your State website. You can find it in any search engine. You type in your State along with "department of taxation". E.g, I typed in CA Department of Taxation on yahoo and "California Franchise Tax Board"
came up. That's the government body that collects income tax {and I believe all taxes} for the State of California. I say all of that because several States do not charge on their website to do income taxes. So you may be able to iFile {eFile} the State return for free. If the IRS accepts your return, you should get your State back in 5 business days and your Federal in 10-15 business days depending upon how late in the season. This also depends upon the software not messing up. You have to keep checking to make sure it went through. I've bought very expensive software before (drake) and it didn't go through. I got all kinds of lies and excuses for why it didn't go through, depending upon which rep answered the phone. |
