Is health insurance through your employer tax deductible?

that depends of whether it was taken out pre tax or after tax
if it was taken out on a pre taz basis then no, because you didn't pay tax on that money. If it was taken out after tax then yes it could be. You need to ask your payroll dept how is was taken out.
It is only a deductible expense if you are Itemizing your deductions on Schedule A rather than taking the Standard Deduction. And all medical expenses must be reduced by 7.5% of your adjusted gross income

Many employers take out health insurance pretax - in that case, your premiums are already deducted from your total wages reported in box 1 of your W-2, and you can't deduct them again.

If they are taken out after-tax, then they could be included as medical expenses if you itemize. But you can only deduct the portion of your medical expenses that exceeds 7.5% of your income.

kinda, it's already taken out before taxes and can't be claimed in any other way

Jay
Not usually. Unless you have high medical expenses (I'm not remembering the threshold), you cannot deduct the premiums.

That IS what you're asking, right? If you can deduct the premiums?

jseah114
No, it is not deductible. You received the tax benefit for the health insurance premiums already since the premiums was paid for with pre-tax dollars. This reduced the amount of your wages that are subject to income tax.

No is not..!! Only medical expenses paid out of your pocket directly to the doctor, pharmacy or hospital are deductilbe..

You can deduct the premiums on the Schedule A, but only the portion that was deducted from your check.

Medical Expenses have a floor limit though - the amount that exceeds 7.5% of your AGI is what is deductible.

Yes - include on Schedule A on the Medical Expenses line.
