True Enough | Is is standard for a tax preparer to charge $400 to get your taxes done? |
I had my taxes prepared by H&R block, and next to my refund amount it list $400 for H&R block fees in parenthesis. We used the following forms: 1040, 1040 schedule A (itemized deductions), 1040 schedule C (profit or loss from business), 1040 schedue SE(self employed) and form 8863(hope and lifetime learning credit). I know some places charge by form, but this sounds drastically high to me. Am I wrong? |

For a return of that complexity, $400 is not unreasonable. A CPA in private practice may have charged more while an EA or other independent may have charged less. Add a State tax return to the mix, and it's hardly excessive at all.
The cost of preparing a tax return depends upon the amount of work involved. Schedule C can be a really messy one especially if you walk in with a shoebox full of receipts and no other business records. The same can be said for Schedule A in many cases. I've seen tax prep fees into 4 or even 5 figures in extreme cases and not be out of line. |

$400 is higher than average.
The Schedule C is increasing the fee the most but this is very common. |

I paid out around $350 for last years. |

It does not sound drastically high.
Schedule C can have a multitude of lines, as well as a bunch of additional forms attached to it. Your self-employment may have involved vehicle expenses, depreciation of equipment, or business use of home for example. |

Without knowing details, it sounds quite reasonable. At $50/hour, they're implying they invested 8 hours in your return. Anything involving Sch C & SE takes a lot fo time to review.
But what was your agreement up front? This shouldn't be a surprise. |

I work for HR Block and I know it seems high but CPA's others charge by the hour. Schedule C and SE may be a lot of work depending on how organized you are or are not. I have spent 1 or 2 hours working on them alone. It is your responsibility to review the forms to make sure they are right but HR Block guarantees that if the tax preparer errors then HR Block pays taxes and penalties on the error. |

i worked for them as a receptionist one year during tax season and they filed my 1040EZ for me. no special circumstances, just my W-2 for one job and according to the receipt it would have cost $113, but that was deducted since I worked for them. so $400 doesn't surprise me. |

$400 is not unreasonable from a place like H&R Block. H&R takes the personality out of the Preparer/Client relationship. They depend on the one stop shop and count on someone walking in the door after you. Next year shop around an find a tax preparer that is A) cheaper and B) cares about your situation. |

It's high, but depending on how complex the schedule C was, it might be reasonable. And if you took additional "services" like and RAL and Peace of Mind guarantee, that would run the tab up a lot extra. |
|

Sounds high but I think it is because of the self employment income and the # of forms ( thanks for listing them ) |

I do tax returns and one such as you describe would cost $ 125.00 at the most. H&R Block is there to make money and you are the one they make it off of. You might register a complaint with the better business bureau; and next year shop around for a more ethical preparer. |

Actually my tax preparer charged me a whopping $435 !! and my income was just 16K with 1 W2 form. The worst is that those people are not even accountants they just take a training as a tax preparer and pass the exam and operate from their own apartment. I usually file my taxes online with EZreturn.com and pay less than $50.
I will never waste money by going to a preparer again unless I have tax issues. |

I prepare tax returns and I would charge such as $150-200, including w2's because you did not mention if you have w2's too. But since you have 1099, which automatically falls on Sch C, and Se is automatically produced by the software, and form 8863, for your 1098-T (education)
$400, is quite excessive charge for this. |
