Otero | Is it OK if my employer does not give payslips? |
I have just arrived to the UK and I got a job but am not familiar with the system here. I know taxes will be deducted from my pay. I have not applied for a NI numer yet. Now then, something that worries me is that I will not be given any sort of payslips but simply cash money in a wages envelope (and the deductions will be noted there). I do not know if this is OK or not but I would like some advise as to how can I check if my employer is really paying the taxes and NI deductions. Any thought would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

First of all, there is nothing wrong in being paid in cash, but your employer must give you a statement every time you are paid showing the gross pay and deductions. You say that the deductions are noted on the wages envelope and this is fine, as long as it breaks them all down. If it doesn't, you must ask your employer for a proper statement of income and tax/NIC deducted.
You cannot check if your employer is paying the deductions over to HMRC - that is confidential to your employer. However, if he fails to pay over the tax and NIC, then he is liable - not you. Keep your wage envelopes in a safe place in case of quesries later. |

if he has u on the tax books u will get a slip if not it means hes paying u into the hand and detuting the tax u shud be paying and keeping it for himself. u should contact ur local tax revenue and sort this out hes breaking a huge law by doing this |

I employ people on a daily basis and cannot employ anyone without a valid national insurance number so first you need to go to your local DWP office and obtain this, You can demand your payslips if he isnt giving you this then something is wrong. |

We have a small business and our 15 staff are registered in the wage book and they get a P60 every year, we don`t have the equipment to print out payslips, we do our wages by hand, it isn`t illegal not to have a payslip as long as you get a wage packet with details written on for the staff to keep. |

It sounds like cash in hand. If you have no NI I am not sure he can pay you legitimately. You need to sort it out if you want to stay as it'll only mean trouble for both of you. |
