JDH. | Is it a myth that if you never start paying your income taxes then you don't have to pay them? |
I heard from someone that if you don't start filing your income taxes to start with then you don't need to, but if you make the mistake of filing them the first time then you're stuck with it for life. I just turned 18 and was wondering if this is true or not. |

No, that's not how it works. You might be likely to escape notice for not paying taxes for a while, but if you have any kind of job where your taxes are automatically withheld (i.e. any non-cash payroll), the information makes its way to the IRS, and they'll eventually catch up with you.
If you do have income taxes taken out of your paycheck by your employer, then it's definitely in your best interest to file a tax return, so you can get some of your money back as a refund.
Most taxpayers have "too much" tax taken out of their paychecks and get a refund at the end of the year. If you don't file your taxes, then the government just keeps that money. |

yeah, it's true, because you'll be in jail with no income to have to report |

Your W2 wages, 1099 wages, 1099 interest, etc. are all reported to the IRS and therefore they know if you are not filing your taxes because they have an elaborate computer system that matches these forms to your social security number and makes sure that your return shows these items. Trust me the IRS is nice enough that if you ever "forget" to put any of these items on your return they'll write you a nice letter and let you know what you forgot and they'll probably attach a nice bill to it as well. |

There are people who believe what you are saying. There might even be some constitutional (theoretically) justification for it. And a lot of those people have spent time in jail for tax evasion, or live a life of looking over their shoulders for IRS agents.
So, it's a myth. |

No, Dear. Tell your friend to have his brain examined. Any wages you earn are REPORTED to the IRS. If you don't file they will come looking for you. You will incur enormous fines and penalties on top of the income tax you didn't pay. Sorry. When you put the and IRS together, what do you get? TheIRS. Not yours. |
