Damn that Man | Is it a rip-off to have a third party prepare my tax return? |
I have a lot of friends who do it themselves and say it's simple. There are also people who say you get more back if you take them to a place like HR Block or a CPA. Will I be able to maximize my tax return doing it myself? Any advice is welcome. Thank you. |

Most taxpayers can prepare their own tax returns and would come up with the same tax liability as any tax pro would. If your only income is from wages reported on Form W-2 and a bit of bank interest there's really no reason to pay anyone.
Even somewhat more complex returns including deductions for a mortgage and property taxes can easily be handled with inexpensive off-the-shelf software or at any one of dozens of on-line tax prep sites.
The tax prep firms like Block, Hewitt, and Liberty skirt the legal limits in their advertising with their refund claims. You can't claim that you will get a taxpayer a larger refund than anyone else could so they all claim "The largest refund allowed by law" now. Their marketing models are designed to instill fear, uncertainty, and doubt and then offer a solution -- like Block's ad that shows people tearing their hair out and one cool cucumber proclaiming, "I've got people!" Yeah, right!
If your income is less than about $56k per year you can e-file for free from the Free E-File link on the IRS website. There may be a charge to file your State return but if you go to your State's tax department website you may discove that they may offer a similar program though often with lower earnings limits for free service. |

If you own your own business and have a lot of deductions, a professional (CPA or Enrolled Agent) can be a good idea. If your return is simple, you should be able to do it yourself. And unless you make a mistake or the preparer does, you will come out with the same refund either way. But if you do it yourself you save the fee. |

OMG you can SO do it yourself. Unless you have rental property, stock sales or something complicated like that I say, do it yourself. Even then I would not go to Jackson Hewitt or HR Block. In those cases I would go to a CPA. (I had rental property and went to H&R Block, ended up paying them, knew more than them and did it myself anyway!)
All you have to do is read the instructions, go line by line and read the book when you have questions. Don't be intimidated, it's VERY simple!!!! Some people actually like it! I do! |

If everything is Basic, Simple return, nothing fancy. Do it yourself! I use Tax cut on the computer. Very Easy to use. The program knows all the deductions you will be able to claim. |

It all depends on your individual situation and your knowledge of tax law. More than likely, a professional will know of things you can do to reduce your tax liability that you will not.
Also note: A larger refund should NOT be your goal. I can increase your refund by $1040 by changing your W-4 to withhold an extra $20/week from your pay. Overall, you have ZERO benefit from this approach. |

H&R Block uses and sells TaxCut. We've not had any trouble using it ourselves and we don't have them trying to sell us more services... |

I do mine every year at hr block.com I don't use the paper forms. it's cheaper and u don't have to listen to a sales pitch. also it makes next years return easier, since your basic information is saved. u don't load any software, just sign in like an email account and answer the questions. it's like sitting in an office doing the interview. |

It really depends on your needs. Yes you can use software to do it yourself. Software asks you questions and you answer them. They usually have some help if you need it. Because of this you dont need to know a lot of tax law. Do you want to handle difficult stuff? Maybe not. Rentals, foreclosures, insolvency, self employment. It does help to have a professional for these. If you go to a CPA make sure the CPA is certified for taxes.
People are always knocking H&R Block, and yes it isnt necessarily cheap. The cost of doing business isnt cheap. So many preparers have so many years of experience. I dont try to push extra services on people. Clients come to Block because they want their refunds right away or they have complicated returns. Block also guarantees their work. Does the software? I have never been to JH or Liberty but what if you get a letter from the IRS off season? Are they going to help you? Block does. Overall the IRS audited 43% of EIC claims last year.
CA requires 24 hourse of continuing ed. Block requires 30. I took 120. Do I know everything? NO. But I know a lot. There is some very complicated tax law out there. Am I worth the money? Absolutely. |
