Is it all a big conspiracy to get money?
The family unit in England is eroding as we once knew it. If we look at a simple process, is raking in tax the reason.
Everyone, quite rightly, was encouraged by Margaret Thatcher to become property owners.
There are now countless millions out there co-habiting,or "living over the broom" as my gran would say!
Inheritance tax kicks in when an estate is over £300,000.
The rise in property prices is excluded from inclusion in the advertised rates of inflation, and guess what, the In. Tax threshold tends to go up by about the rate of inflation.
Property only passes free of I.T. to a spouse.
So it appears to be to the benefit of the Government to get us all to "live over the broom"
Or am I just too cynical?

No your not being cynical I would say you were spot on! Add to that the breakdown in law and order due to the collapse of the family unit. This gives a perfect excuse for the raft of laws curbing personal liberty, more Civil Servants - more tax. You now are going to be taxed on your view, your neighbourhood and your rubbish. However there is just so much juice you can squeeze from an orange and the ordinary hard working people of this country have reached their limit!

Everything the government does is money motivated. The crushing of the unions and socialism was the downfall of the concept of a caring society. We now live in a social structure based on greed, short time employment, poor dental and health care for all. No hope for future property owners and the crushing of freedom of the individual. However if your making big money life is great!!

Two factors have led to the demise of the family unit - the first was the removal of all the positive incentives (especially married Tax allowance) and the second the ease and cost of divorce (mainly for the man).

Other factors include equal pay for women and a general expectation of higher standards of living - girl no longer has to get married to achieve a decent standard of living & the guy sees no point in getting married if he dosn't want kids.

Finally, none of us have to "put up with it" from our partners any more = co-habitation means we can dump partners that become difficult to live with, whilst marriage is a 'trap' that costs us dear to get out of.

Cynical for a loanshark?
Perish the thought.

However, your view appears to fit in with the thinking of most right thinking people.

Small consolation I know.

I don't see how, in your example, the government is responsible for unmarried co-habitation.

In fact, since the tax structure allows for the passing of 300,000 GBP tax-free to a spouse, I would say that the government has established a tax code that encourages marriage.

So let's change the question a bit: If there is a significant tax savings for married home-purchasers, why are young people choosing to co-habitate without the benefit of marriage?

There are more complex & relevant reasons why the family unit is breaking down rather than just Inheritance Tax. Having said that, it needs looking at.
