Even if you spend money the moment you receive it, it's better to reduce your refund and take your money now (as long as you don't have to pay more later).
Time is money. You could invest the increased income you receive from not having so much withheld and receive some kind of return on it, such as interest.
Or you could spend the increased income. If you spend it, you're still saving as compared to waiting to receive the refund. That's because (1) prices very seldom go down over the course of a year, and (2) you get the use of something that you bought during the time before you would have otherwise received your refund.
The IRS knows this. That's why they never send out a notice saying, "We're worried that you're withholding TOO MUCH. Please don't give us so much money!"
If you want to save your money but you have trouble resisting the impulse to buy, then that's not a tax problem, it's an impulse control problem. Economically, it's always better to receive $100/month this year than $1200 in one lump next May. |

If you take the extra in your paycheck and invest or save it - that will give you more money in the long run because it will earn interest, or earn dividends or grow in value.
If you can't resist spending that extra money, then for some people it is better to let the IRS save if for them - but they earn no interest the amount they have overpaid! |

It is best to overpay as little as possible and get little or no tax refund. When you overpay, you are essentially giving the government an interest-free loan. I think you could put that money to better use, don't you? |

Technically you will get the same either way but if you are the type of person that will put it away either in a high yield savings account or know how to invest money then get more in your paycheck. This way you will have your money plus interest. If you are like me and will just spend the money then I suggest you wait for it until you get the tax refund. |

I always like to get at least $500-1000 refund - getting it as an extra $10 or 20 per week in my pay - I'll just spend it and not even notice it - at least with a big chunk at refund time, you can use it for big things, vacation, investment, etc |

The total money is the same amount - the only thing that changes is when you get it. For each dollar more you get per week, you get $52 less as a refund. |

It just depends on your situation and if you need more money now then I would change your w2 at work that is what we do. But if you don't need it now and can wait until the end of the year then do that. |
