Is it better to claim single or married on your taxes?
I was wondering if you get more money back ... I have heard you get more money single and I have also heard you get more money married. Which is more true?

It is better to claim whichever you actually are. Perhaps you are confusing married filing jointly or separately?

Keep in mind, you don't have a choice on your tax return.

If you are legally married as of 12/31 of any year, you must file as "Married" for that year and going foward.

If you are divorced as of 12/31 of any year, you must file as "Single" (or Head of Household if applicable) for that year and going forward.

On the w-4, single withholds more tax than married.
On the actual tax return, married is often less tax due than single.

depends on income ..we do it both ways to see what is better for us. married or head of household

lunatic
There really are too many variables to answer this. If you are not married, you can't file married. If you are married, you can not file single.

You really have to get the forms and the instructions and work it out.

It can go either way, depending on your income and the income your spouse has if you are married, or it can be the same. If you're married, married filing joint is almost always better than married filing separately.

You don't have a choice on how to file - it depends on whether you were married or single at of the end of the year.

depends on income level if both of you work. i try it both ways this year using software and married got me back an extra $1200

it depends on your w2's...for example when youre spouse didnt have any taxes taken out and you did...then you pay ofr his side...its always better to file mfj because you get the highest sd, but in some cases you need to file seperate if the spouse owes the irs money or unpaid debts
