Is it fair to increased taxes on cigarettes in a free society?

Yes -- why should those who have asthma, those with lung diseases, or those too young to be able to stand up and say NO ... be FORCED to breathe in cigarette smoke (that is NOT fair either (but is getting better with smoke-free zones) ... and this is a free society). Raise the Cigarette Taxes and maybe we will have Healthier AIR to breathe and less remnants of cigarettes on the ground, the beaches, across the highways, etc etc etc.

mstrobert
YES! If you smoke you pay.

The problem is the money will probably go to some politician's pet project.

yes of cource.

As fair as any other tax.

RUSerious
It all depends on what side of the fence you are sitting on.

Please bear in mind, it is not a question of fairness, but just another method to eradicate the use of tobacco products in our society.

Judy1
"Fair" really has nothing to do with it. It depends on the laws that are passed, and laws have been passed taxing cigarettes.

Smoking is stupid. Increasing taxes on stupid behavior is one means society has to encourage getting smarter.

Why not? If you don't want to pay the tax, just quit.

Free does not mean without economic cost. That's a Utopian society, not a free society.
