Firstly the tax at stake here is Excise Duty. Excise duty is a UK tax and not an EU tax and there is no way the Excise duty could be paid for unless the cigarettes are in the UK already.
To put it bluntly, if you buy the cigarettes there is a very big likelihood that they will be seized and you will loose all your money. A bigger issue however is that these cigarettes could have been made anywhere and are not subject to any sorts of testing or standards that normal cigarettes are subject to. This means that their could be hazardous or poisonous chemicals in them. Is that worth saving money for?
The only way to get UK excise duty free Cigarettes is to travel to a foreign country and bring back your personal travelers allowance. |

What is illegal is evading the tax due to be paid on the import of the goods.
If that is what you intend to do. |

Cheapest Marlboro that is genuine I found was in Mongolia $9 a carton of 200. avoid China as probably fake, I have had the odd carton sent as a gift and so far have not been hit by the Customs, dont blame you for trying as in the UK a packet of twenty Marlboro retails at $11 |

You assume incorrectly!
Ignore these answers, go to the Customs and Excise website and read what they say about tobacco and cigarette import. The customs do not view tobacco products bought remotely in the same way as they do what you buy in person while in europe. You will pay full UK import durty on them plus vat and they will probably cost more in total than at your local supermarket.
It is a weird situation because to the layman what the customs are doing is illegal - taxing an import from a fellow EU member state that has already had that states duty paid on it. |

As everyone has said you must pay the VAT. When they come through the post if they are spotted at any of the boarder controls or sorting offices they will be tagged some how and if you haven't or don't pay the duty you can be fined. |

Yeah it's OK, you just have to pay the VAT |

yeah, EU tax.
If it comes into the UK and customs catch it, they won't charge VAT on it, but they will have you for excise duty, which is naturally rather high as you're probably aware.
It's a gamble, if they don't catch it, you're home free... if they do, then that cheap packet of cigarettes will balloon near to the price of the ones you get out of a vending machine at the pub |

i think that people who order cigarettes or tobacco or both online shouldn't have to pay the uk excise duty on it because it just isn't fair why should people have to pay more when theres already duty paid on it from other european countries.
i think they are just ripping them off because once cigarettes have been ordered online they shouldn't have to pay uk excise duty on it to make it a lot fair especially for heavy smokers that may or appear not to have a passport or may just applied for one they shouln't be charged any more than the duty paid for from other european countries.
people can order them more cheaply online, unless uk high tax was abolished on all tobacco and cigarettes |
