Wolf | Is it legal for a company to charge a sales tax on shipping? |

I did Accounting for years, so I have had to deal with sales taxes in many ways. Each State has it's own way of taxing, some States charge sales tax on shipping and others do not.
The easiest way to find out if a State does charge Sales Tax on something and the current rates is to look up the State's
Sales Tax Division on the Internet. |

it's REQUIRED in some states, like Penna. |

Some states _require_ companies to charge sales tax on shipping, and other's don't. |

Not enough info. to answer, because it depends on what state you are asking about.
This is more a legal question than a tax question, and jurisdiction is almost always relevant to legal question. |

I don't believe so. The shipping and handeling is only supposed to be the actual costs inccured by the company to send you the product. Sales tax is to be added onto the price of the actual product. This reason is because the government charges them a percent to sell things, therefore, this cost goes to paying the government back. The shipping is something that is out of pocket for the company (unless the buyer pays shipping), anyhow, it should go - Cost of the item times the applicable sales tax (this gets the actual sales tax amount). Then you take the sales tax, plus the cost, then add shipping & handling and that should be the total cost. The S&H should not affect the amount of the tax whatsoever. |

In Texas shippinghandling is a 'service' and services are taxable. Thus all Tupperware and Pamper Chef orders in Texas are taxed. |

from what i know, no... shipping is done by USPS, fedex, ups ect and the company buys the shipping from THEM and they arent taxed for it. So when you pay for shipping you're just covering for the company. If they tax you then they are just trying to make menial profit of it |
