it has been over a month and a half since my husband and i have sat down with our accountant in order to go over and gather all documents that are needed to file our taxes. my husband called him on monday to see how things were going and my accountant says, "he has completed 60% of the filing and he should be done by the end of this week". is this normal or should we fire him? |

It sounds like he hasn't even started working on your return.
You could give him until the end of the week and if he's not finished, you could find another accountant.

Your records can not be held for ransom. Your accountant can refuse to give you your returns until you pay for them, but your property is your property. |

A month and half?! You must have a really complicated return or your accountant must have too much business. When you engaged him/ her did you ge an estimate as to the number hours that it would take to file?
All of that aside, unless you formally fire the accountant, consider the tax return a "work in progress" and it is completely legal and necessary for the accountant to have your W-2s. When/ if you decide to take your business elsewhere, then you should expect the return of all of your documentation. |

Certainly. Well did you discuss a timetable when you gave him the stuff? Is your return simple or fairly complicated? How does he charge: by form or by hour spent? Did you discuss fees?
It's not like he's holding it hostage, is he? Did you guys wait a whole month and a half to call him? Did you express any urgency in getting your return filed? |

You say he hasn't done anything, but he has done 60% of the work. How do you know he hasn't done anything? He says otherwise. Unless it was promised to you by a certain date, as long as it's filed on time, I don't see the problem, let alone any violation of any law. If he's not fast enough for you, set a deadline next year, or find someone else to prepare your taxes. |

You might have efiled on your own using any number of programs...but that doesn't help now. You might call the licensing board in your stateand report him. You might also ask for your info back and go to irs.gov. Even tho I was over income for free filing 9.95 and a same day return was worth it! filing taxes is not as hard as some people think, esp. with all the software. That's what your accountant probably uses anyway! |
