Revenue stamp is required only if the amount exceeds Rs.5000/-. This rule came recently. The below stated words appears in the web site address given below.

"What is a revenue stamp?
It is a tax of Re.1 in the form of revenue stamp, which should be affixed on receipt for any money or other property, the amount or value of which exceeds Rs. 5,000. "

It is not mandatory to affix a revenue stamp on the payment reciept of less than Rs 5000, but it is a good idea to put a revenue stamp of a payment reciept even if it is less than 5000 as once you have a revenue stamp with cross signatures on the reciept then it can not be challanged in the court of law.

The basic purpose of the revenue stamp is to give a legal identification to the document even on the plain paper. Revenue stamp has got more uses than just the payment vouchers.

Let us say you sell your vehical to a third party and you can make a sale and purchase reciept on plain paper and affix a revenue stamp on it, so it will now be accepted in court of law. Hope it helps

revenue receipt are mandatory that should be crossed by way of signing of holder/owner of the instrument so same could be enforceable at law. Moreover if payment is made at cash counter the cashier could ascertain by way of getting another signature on the same instrument.

Legally how can be identify the transaction of the year ? is there any year printed or any design change every year to identify the transaction of the year, as the revenue stamp will be authentical to proove the year of the transaction. Pl. guide.

lalit kumar
what is revenue stamp and why should affixed on exceed 5000/

Aanchal
Sir what the limit after exceeding 5000/- till that amount the revenue stamp will indicate the authnication of the transaction as such like if i am paying salary to my G.M. on cash basic last 5 months he is only siging vouchers with revenue stamp. Is it correct. With Regards, Aanchal Srivastava
