Is it me, or is every college student getting screwed out of getting a stimulous check?
Considering most are claimed as dependent and over the age of 17.

Parents of college students already get an education credit or a tuition deduction, get $3400 less in income and $340 or more in tax and if your parents are poor, make them eligible for HOH and EIC.

Congress apparently felt that was enough.

Getting screwed out of it? You aren't eligible.

Did you get screwed out of a new car when Oprah gave them away, but you weren't eligible because you weren't in the audience? What's the difference? When something is being given away for free, nobody has a "right" to get it, so anyone who doesn't isn't getting screwed out of anything. Congress made the rules, and decided you didn't qualify.

ms_melaniac
Not just college students. Its ANYBODY that can legally be claimed as a dependant.

An adult who is still a dependent on another person's tax return generates no rebate. As an adult, you would have to earn income and support yourself for a rebate, or be receiving Social Security or Veteran's benefits due to disability.

In 2008, support yourself and you will may qualify for the rebate you didn't get this year.

CAITLIN
If you are claimed as a dependent you won't get a stimulus check. Your parents will get an extra $300 for you as well as an extra $300 for any other dependent children they claim on their tax return.

If you have a job and make your own money, yes I agree you are getting screwed. Maybe you can ask the parent to give you your money from their check?

Real Deal Bruce
If you owe the IRS, then you get nothing, and if you think your getting screwed now. Just wait until the republicans return another couple of years in office. You won't have to worry about the stimulus check.
Think again about it. This is really not a stimulus check, but a bribe to keep the republicans in office. You, my friend, are only getting something that get you something that still will not help the economy, because they already found ways to get it back. So, don't worry about it much. Just relax and hope you get one, because whether your college student or not. There are other people who are getting that screwed feeling with you, because my fiance, definitely is. I still haven't received mine. So, that puts me in the same class as you.

Yes, this is true.

If you do not receive full amount of $600 now, then you may get the balance amount when you file your 2008 return, and you become eligible for the tax rebate.

For information on stimulus tax rebate read: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/are-you-eligible.html

If you haven't paid taxes, or earned wages, how can you be eligible for a stimulous check ? Being a college student gives you no entitlement.

V B, not all parents get the education credits, for instance, since my father is single, the income cut-off is too low. Yes, you are correct they get the $3400 off, but you get that for the children under 17. For the children under 17 they even have the child tax credit, sometimes dependent care credit. That's not enough? Also, getting HOH status has no dependence on being "poor" and if a couple is married (and living together), then this status is not available.

To the asker - I very much agree, since I don't get my own exemption, I end up owing tax (of course I keep enough withheld, but I DO NOT get everything, or even most back)...and I deserve a rebate. My father (not to brag, because it sucks when it comes to taxes) makes too much as a SINGLE father to get the rebate (if he was married, he'd be fine), but he pays A LOT in taxes and is not eligible for any credits. We are both hard working tax payers (he works 80 hours a week in a factory) and we deserve the stimulus money just as much as people getting $4000 worth of free EIC and THEN a rebate check too!

If you are over 18 it's up to you whether or not your can be claimed. If you select on your taxes that you will not be claimed and your parents still claim you, they will be the one that has to make a correction not vice versa.
