Is it possible to get a new SSN?
Is it possible to get a new social security number? And if so, how?

Actually, all the answers before me are incorrect. It is possible to get a new social security number, but only under very rare circumstances. There was a case involving a woman who had her identity stolen and used by so many illegal aliens that the social security administration gave her a new one. You'd have to contact the social security administration to find out the exact procedure. But it is possible.

Only on the rarest of occasions. Two circumstances come to mind:

1. Witness protection program.

2. Severe identity theft issues.

#1 is automatic when you go into the program. #2 is seldom the case, though if your details have been stolen and used extensively for fraudulent purposes by multiple fraudsters it may happen.

Here's the info directly from the Social Security Administration:

"Generally, we assign only one Social Security number to an individual. We use that number to record the individual’s earnings so that we can determine future benefits and, eventually, to track benefits paid. Only under the following circumstances can we assign a different number:

Sequential numbers assigned to members of the same family are causing problems;

More than one person has been assigned, or is using, the same number;

An individual has religious or cultural objections to certain numbers or digits in the original number;

A victim of identity theft continues to be disadvantaged by using the original number; (See Identity Theft And Your Social Security Number, Publication No. 05-10064.)
or

Situations of harassment, abuse or life endangerment (including domestic violence). (See New Numbers For Domestic Violence Victims, Publication No. 05-10093.)"

Why do you want a new SSN? Maybe there is another way to resolve whatever problem you are having?

gregbroiles
No. People who charge money for "new tax ID numbers" are selling you an EIN ("employer ID number") which is available from IRS for free. Credit grantors and others can figure out that an EIN is not an SSN and they will not be fooled.

Jeff
Only if you've never had one.

Otherwise, your SSN is your (de facto) National ID number, and you can't change it.

Possible or legal?it is possible but highly illegal

Even with many cases of ID theft, it is impossible to get a new social security number. The thought behind that might be that people with bad credit would be able to just start over again. Also, the SSA already has problems keeping track of everyone already.

No.

Well first, you get a new birth certificate. And a new mom and dad. Unless Social Security has issued your number to two people with the same name (It has happened) you are pretty much marked for life with what you have.
