Just been to investigate this and it says that they will be credited £12.50 per week for 12 weeks on to a card which they will only be able to use for fresh food and groceries. It is a scheme that is only going to be used in a deprived part of Scotland. Right, I can see a MASSIVE hole in this straight away. Even if they can only use these cards to get fresh fruit and vegetables who's going to stop someone, (their neighbour, friend, relative), giving them £12.50 in cash for cigarettes and buying that person the food in return! DOH! The Government haven't thought that one through have they? Or will they employ someone to sit with each of these people for 12 weeks to make sure the food they buy is cooked and eaten by them?!?!?! Jesus, I could do a better job than the council at making decisions! Idiots!

Oh, and would the Government like to give me some money for working my f***ing **** off every day and paying ALL my taxes honestly, (I am self employed), and not smoking and hardly ever drinking?!?!?!?!?! No, I thought not!!!!!

completely agree. Smoking should be banned, and that's it. Giving money to people to quit is typical of our pussy government. They're so damn soft they even give money to people to encourage them to quit smoking. Makes me ashamed to be british.

If I thought for one moment it would work then I'd say go for it. I'm an ex smoker and I don't think any amount of external reward or incentive is going to work unless you want to do it for yourself.

I don't know about in the UK, but in the US cigarettes are heavily taxed. So I'm sure this payment would be coming from cigarette taxes from which you haven't paid. So don't lose sleep over it.

as long as they stop rolling onto the bus, choosing to sit next to me, then exhalling a huge breath of fag breath, I am happy to pay anything.

though agree its unfair, they should all be taken away to a desert island and forced to breath in each others air until they realise how gross they smell and stop.

and how much would you be paying as a tax payer to treat these people on the NHS over their lives for smoking related diseases? (a damn sire more than £1200) I wouldn't worry its Scotland nothing to do with the UK it was passed by the Scottish parliment not the UK one. Seems you do not have a clue!

In the poorer parts of Dundee Scotland, they are gettg £12.50 per week for food.

How they know they are not going to spend it on smoking or they are going to stop smoking, I dot know, ok so its going to be better for non smokers health, but we all smoke outside now anyway, so let smokers do them self damage, if they sop smoking by getting paid, they obviously have the will power to do it in the first place without money being offered to them.

I dont know where the money is coming from so im not going to say im paying for it out of my tax, because I dont know, but I wont be happy I am!!

Its very stupid in my opinion, like I said they obviously have neough will power to do, despite money being offered, surely £12.50 would pay for a homeless person food for a week, or these poor children in third world countries, I know thats where I would rather my money go.

NHS in Scotland is free to spend the UK's contribution to the NHS any way that is likes. Same as Wales with free prescriptions. They say that the cost will be offset by the saving in treatment on the NHS. This payout is only available to smokers in Dundee and the money can only be spent on fruit and veg.
To me it seems a misuse of public money.

I think it's probably a good incentive for people to give up smoking thus putting less strain on the national health care system which is good for all taxpayers but it's also probably TOTALLY UNENFORCEABLE which makes you wonder if it's just another way to grab votes.

In my country, the government will pay for your nicotine patches if you join a monitored program. Perhaps this is the way to go.

Over 50% (probably well over) of the cost of cigarettes where I am is government taxes so that's usually a better way of getting people to quit.

Apparently the treatment for smoking-related problems costs lots more than this scheme would. Dunno if it's going to work... sounds like a desperate move.. but these are desperate times though. Everything is getting out of control. =(
