Chulaga | Is it true if you file tax jointly, I would lose dependents and head of house hold credit/tax returns? |
Hi There,
I’m about to get married. And, I a few question regarding file tax jointly vs. filing single.
I’m mother of a 1-year old. Last year, I filed my tax as 1 dependent and head of household. And, my tax return amount was pretty good. I just heard from my co-worker that married filing jointly, I would lose my 1 dependent and head of house returns. Is that true?

You will no longer get head of household, that is for single families, but you will not loose your dependent, you still claim your child. You have to file either "Married/Jointly" or "Married/Separate", "Head of Household" is no longer appropriate. |

You wouldn't lose the dependent, you'd claim the dependent on your joint return. And you'd no longer file as head of household, but joint return rates are better than head of household so that's not a loss to you, it's a gain.
If you got EIC last year, that will be affected - could be higher, lower or eliminated. EIC on a joint return is calculated on joint income, so result would depend on what the two of you make. |

You can still claim the dependent but you would no longer be able to file as "Head of Household".

You will not lose the dependent. When married you file joint or separate. Joint is the more desireable. HOH gives you an 8k standard deduction. MFJ is 10900. |

When you marry you lose your head of household status, but you would still be able to claim your child as a dependent. You and your husband would get two exemptions for yourselves. Your standard deductions will also change, and you will go to a different column on the tax table. Cheer up. It may not be that bad. |

Once yer married yer married and you no longer have the option of filing single. You can file married filing separately. On a joint return, you still get yer dependent. Married filing jointly is generally cheaper than married filing separately. |

It's true. You must be unwed to claim head of household. You guys would still be able to claim the dependant though. |

first of all you will not lose your dependent you could still claim your baby regardless i'm a mother of three kids am i'm also married and i have been filing my taxes with my husband for the past four years and i have always gotten the EIC and additional tax credit's it's actually better to file MFJ and yes you will lose the head of house hold but trust me you will be pleased with your refund but remember it also depends on how much you and you husband made good luck! |

No. You get these credits on a married filing joint return but not a married filing separately |

You still get the dependent credit, but you don't get head of household you get another credit though and it is a lot more than the head of house hold credit. |

If you are married, you can only file as married filing jointly or married filing separately. You can not file as head of household. You can claim dependents.
In most cases, it is better to file as MFJ. Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/filing-status-for-married.html |

No you will not lose the dependant and you could lose the head of household depending who files first and how it works better. Avoid you co-worker, see a tax advisor |
