i'm in CA

It is only in the talking stage right now. It will be an advance of your 2008 tax refund. When you file your 2008 taxes in 2009, you will have to pay it back.

No.

Nothing is finalized as of now. They are only in the talking stage.

The rumors are $800 for single, $1600 married but there will be income limits. If you make too much or too little, you probably won't receive it.

As of now, if it happens, it will probably be an advance against your 2008 refund.

not exactly. It all depends on what the final decision will be. If you make too much or not enough. I read today that it is possible that some of the lower class will not get anything at all. I also heard that if you file single.. its at most 800.00 if you file together ( spouse ) at most you could get 1600.00. For more information I would tune to CNN.

I believe that was for MFJ people. if you are single you may expect to receive between 300-800 depending on how congress decides on its economic relief plan. And just to be clear you get back what you paid in less what you owe. this would most likely be a credit against what you already owe.

Call the president at 202-456-1111 and complain. Read your local newspaper. It will tell you that nothing has been approved yet.

There's been no official word, only a proposal that the news jumped on.

My take on it: If you find the check in the mail, then (and only then) will you know you qualified.

Judy1
No, not even close to correct.

First of all, this is a PROPOSAL, not a done deal. Nobody gets anything unless Congress passes a rebate, and if they do, there's no guarantee that it will match what the president talked about in his speech.

As proposed though, it is a REBATE on taxes - so only people who pay taxes would get it. The proposal was to eliminate charging tax on the 10% bracket, the lowest bracket. Amount would be up to $800 per individual filer, or $1600 for a married couple filing a joint return, but only if you paid that much in income tax for 2007. If it's passed soon and as proposed, it's estimated that the checks could come as early as June.
