Sales tax has not been a deduction for 20 years. You read a very old book. |

Only if the expense qualifies as tax deduction
Say for example I get my nails done or go to Starbucks for my morning coffee. Even if I keep those receipts, IRS will not refund me the money
But if I am a business owner, and I go to a restaurant and meet prospective customers, I can save the receipt and claim tax deductions for it -- which for this type of expense is 50%. Or I buy office supplies and even computer, those expenses I can deduct. Or if I have a website and do business from the website, then I can deduct from my taxes the cost of buying the domain, web hosting, or even books and magazines I buy that will help me run my business
There are tax rules, and only if the expense qualifies, then that's the time it makes sense to keep the receipt so you can have it in time for tax filing
But the mere practice of keeping receipts is not reason to get tax deductions |

No, honey, it doesn't work this way.
You've obviously misunderstood someone.
Retail receipts include state and local sales taxes, which are added to your purchases and kept by the government. Sales taxes are different from income taxes, and you don't get them back on your income tax refunds.
Retail receipts are usually kept in order to provide proof for claimed deductions, ON YOUR INCOME TAXES,like allowable itemized business related expenses. You don't get any sales taxes back, there isn't a SALES TAX REFUND for the last 20 years or so.... |

If you itemize you have the choice of deducting the state and general local tax you paid or the sales tax you paid. You can either keep your receipts or use the sales tax table which is an average of what a person in your income bracket would spend. If usually is more beneficial to use the state and local tax unless you purchaed a new vehicle, motorcycle, RV, offroad vehicle, etc. |

yes if they are for work purposes but i think you have to prove it and stuff so be careful if you try to do anything |

Yes and no. When filing, you have the option to itemize deduction or not. All the sales tax that you want to itemize will have to be more than the taxes taken out from your pay check in order to gain any benefits. If your taxes from your w-2 are more, it's better to use the standard deduction instead. |

only if they are business-related expenses and you are filing a form C for a business - not for personal purchases |

No, No, NO. Only Business related. Gas, supplies, etc. can be used as a deduction. |

SOME of them might work... like if you bought something for work purposes. For example, my boss gets his clothes dry cleaned for work, and he was able to use those. I've also heard if you save the receipts from toll roads you can use them, but I don't know if thats entirely true. You should check with a tax person. |
