Not at all. We are not yet in a recession, at least not by the technical definition of negative growth in two straight quarters. Just the opposite of what you fear may happen. Many people may receive a rebate on their income taxes, so they will spend and stimulate the economy. It is not definite, but the government seems to be moving in that direction. |

No.
The federal tax rate schedule was set in place in 2006 (I think), and it's set in stone. If there is a recession (the same thing as a "depression"), you will not owe more taxes because of it.
People are saying this because our economy slumped this past year, and the almighty American dollar isn't worth what it was last year. Due to this, the government debts will increase, and that would mean we all have to pay higher taxes to cover it. However, it takes an act of Congress (literally) to change tax rate schedules, and they are never made for previous years. |

hahaha, no....we are hoping there won't be one. There isn't one now. President Bush worked out a plan to give extra money to those who file taxes in the middle of the year, those who work and file will get $600.00, with kids $300 more up to 2 kids. Working couples (Married $1200.00) |

No. If you're single and a tax payer they will give you $600. If you are married and have kids $1200 + 300 each child |

No, no truth in that at all! Lucky for ALL of us.
But let's clear something up quickly, OK? We are NOT in a recession! Yes, the economy HAS been in trouble lately but we're nowhere near a recession yet. The textbood definition of a recession is 2 consecutive quarters (6 months) of shrinkage of the GNP. The growth rate of the GNP has been slowing but that's VERY different form a shrinking economy!
Could we be heading towards a recession? Yes! Are we in one yet? No way!
And just my opinion on the so-called "stimulus" package that Bush has proposed: It won't help at all. The $150 billion cost is less than 1% of the total US economy but it will drive the FY08 deficit up by nearly 100%. That would be akin to earning $500 a week and getting a $5 raise but having your credit card debt double over night. It is NOT a smart idea, from a president who is not know for his intelligence or economic prowess. Hopefully it will just go away. |
